Astro Saber AVA Power Harness Question

Post by N4KVE »

Hello. I just picked up an AVA at a local hamfest. NTN 7227E. The wiring harness has a red wire B+ with a yellow wire connected to it. I assume the yellow wire is for ign sense, but in this case that function is bypassed. The black wire is B- but there is also a green wire. What is it for? Also is there a way to change the wiring to not charge the battery, as my only short batteries are Li on, & I don't think they can be correctly charged in the AVA. Thanks for any help. GARY N4KVE

Green wire is for illumination sense; hit it with 12V and the back lights dim.

You are correct that the charging circuit in an AVA will cook/explode a LIon battery, and no, there is no easy or documented way to disable battery charging while in operation. If you absolutely had to use it, you could always stick tape over the charging contacts on the battery. Otherwise, just pick up a couple of Multiplier M4593s.

Try disconnecting the yellow wire.
