HT1550XLS slow turn on

Post by RADIOMAN2002 »

I have a few HT1550XLS radios, some are new and some are about 8 years old, of course the displays started going long ago, so finally after they reached the point that I can't read them or no display at all I replaced 2 of them in my UHF radios. Now both radios have the same problem, they may take as long as 1/2 hour to turn on, or as little as 2 minuits( the green LED just flashes). Both displays are new as of 2/2010 ordered directly from Motorola. Now I noticed this change on the first one right away, but I did the second radio any way, wondering if the first display was bad. Both exhibit the same problem. I even tried a third new display with the same results. The firmware was updated to R05.14.00 after the new displays were installed with no change. Does anyone have any additional knowledge on this problem or know if there is a bulletin on it.

I was wondering about that myself, I just can't seem to understand why the backup battery would cause a turn on problem after the display was replaced. Going to look for a battery in the stock room and try that. I am also going to take the older UHF radio and hook it up to the newer VHF case and see if that makes any difference. Thanks.

Are you saying that the keypad has something to do with this problem, because other than the display, there is no other electronics in the front cover. I have yet to try swapping the UHF and VHF radios of mine and see where the problem stays. I did recase the radio and replaced the ribbon cables too. So other than the keyboard, I replaced everything on the front cover.

That is strange. It would almost be worth trying a different case to confirm, and then try to determine the difference between a case and just a display. It makes no sense based on the info given.

Ok, here's what I got. I took the NEW VHF radio and put it in the OLD UHF case with a new display and new plastic and the problem went along with the case? The radio took about 1 min to power up, with the green LED flashing, and even when I turned off the radio the LED still flashed? Then I took the OLD UHF radio and put it in the NEW VHF case and the radio powered up immediatly??????? So they only thing left top try is to swap the keyboard around and see if the problem goes with the keyboard.

Ok, here is the definitive solution, I still have to call Motorola parts about this, but apparently you cannot mix an old keypad ending in and 05 with a new display board ( the new keypad ends in an 07). I swapped the keypad from a new radio into the problem front with the new display and the problem went away? There is not much on the board, but none the less it definitly was the problem. I'll let you know if Moto parts has any comment on this.

There was an SRN/FSB covering this a few years ago.

You know that's what I was asking for orginally!! Gotta love Motorola, they can't even get a passive device, namely the keypad to work with updated parts. Glad were going to ICOM.

Again it doesn't specify that you HAVE to replace the keypad. Doesn't make any sense why a passive device like a keypad would cause problems. The SRN is specific to dead pixels, not a problem with mixing display and keypad. Issue is solved, admin please lock.
