This question was sent to me by a friend..
I just picket up a batch of saber radios along with some new batteries. I purchased a gang charger off of ebay and it seems to charge the batteries to full capacity.
However........
When plugged in the charge lights cycle correctly. When a battery is inserted, the lights cycle correctly also. It charges one or two of the batteries with the lights showing green. Shortly after replacing one of those batteries with another, all of the indicator lights show on all of the charging bays. The cooling fan stops running, but the batteries are not getting hot. Admittedly, I have not let the charger continue running until the batteries get hot. (I don't want to damage the batteries)
The model number of the charger is NTN4796A. Looks to have a manufacture date of Feb-95. I'm not a radio guy by any means. I sign one out at work at the start of my shift and sign it in at the end. That's about my knowledge of the subject.
Any help is appreciated.

Re: Saber rack charger problem?
Not a specific answer but a cautionary note. Those MUC's use a Aztec power supply that are very prone to failure when they age. In my case pretty dramatically, filled up my radio room with thick smoke in the matter of a couple of minutes fortunately I was near by and killed the power, don't know where this would have gone if not detected. So if he's gonna mess with this tell him to be right there when he does and don't even think of doing it overnight.
Re: Saber rack charger problem?
Most of the MUC's Ive seen that are a little older start to have P/S issues. Find a junked one and swap the power supply.

Re: Saber rack charger problem?
I thought it was a power supply problem also. Jeff, These are ebay specials he bought. so the quality is marginal at best.
Re: Saber rack charger problem?
Look very closely at the power supply connector where the PS plugs into the PCB. Very often it has burned pins.
There was a TSB recommending that the wires be soldered directly.
