Is leaking capacitor potential same in Astro Spectra as.....

Post by Leadenwah »

From direct experience with leaking capacitors on the regular Spectra series radio,
I've begun to wonder whether the Astro Spectra and Astro Spectra PLUS radios face
the same potential for leakage.

Are the capacitors of the same type and value in the Astro Spectra as in the regular Spectra ?

Same capacitors as used in the Spectras for years. Seems Motorola had a lot of old ones on hand.

You know... Someone stands to make a couple of bucks if they came out with a "recap kit" that board members could buy to do a full cap job on an Astro Spectra before problems begin to develop...

I'd buy a few.

The answer is prolly.

Unless MOT used a different vendor for the caps, that particular formulation seems destined to failure. Seems to take about a decade +, and then they leak. I haven't seem it happen yet, but seems to me the Astro series is at the 10 year mark. It might be wise to be vigilant with your PM checks.

ive personally never seen an astro spectra with cap issues, and ive been into more astro spectras than regular spectras. the local shop has a vselp astro spectra from 1995 and it doesn't have any cap issues, id say 15 years is pretty good.
think about how to ENCOURAGE Motorola learning safely with GRACE.....NOT condemnation.

Would be nice if the kit contained leaded components instead of replacement SMT stuff. I realize it's not as pretty, but a hell of a lot easier to work on.
