Spectra error code help

Post by artman »

Hello, I have a spectra on the bench fixing to get recapped. When I power it up I get the error code er 09/10, rat 1, fail 001. I looked on the batlabs page on spectra error codes and did not find anything except the fail 001. I'm curious what the others mean and if there is anything else I need to look for while I'm inside the radio. On another note is it possible to swap a4 and a5 heads? These are medium power VHF dash mount radios.

Here is a list: http://www.repeater-builder.com/motorol ... codes.html

ERROR 09/10: Secure option not communicating with radio

I am not sure if this means the internal or external securenet, but either way, the radio is just telling you that it is programmed for securenet but the module is missing. Can you successfully read/write to the radio? Usually you cannot communicate with the radio (receive an error in RSS) if it is programmed with external securenet and the external module is missing.

FAIL 001, as you said you found, is a VCO unlock. Is it possible someone tried to change the range on the radio that it isn't capable of? From what I have read, you usually you only get this when you try to transmit on a frequency and the VCO unlocks for whatever reason (out of range, etc). Are you getting it on start up all the time? Could be because of bad/leaking caps.

And you are getting a RAT 1 error? Are you sure you are reading it correctly because I have no idea what that is. Maybe someone else can chime in?

Changing from an A4 to A5 head should be as easy as just changing the head type in the Spectra LAB software or bit bang. Search the forums. Since it is dash mount, I am not sure how to go about the physical changing of the heads out of the unit.

Good Luck with everything!
Radios I own: Spectra VHF 110W with A7 head, HT1000 VHF, ICOM IC-F30 VHF, and a Puxing PX-888 VHF.
Scanner I own: Radioshack Pro-164

If you want to get around the 16 mode scan limit on the Motorola Spectra, then read this guide and go to the original thread Here! 8)

You may be getting a combination of error codes for several reasons.

This may be a dual radio that is not connected to its pair anymore.

As stated, the 09/10 is a secure option error. The RAT1 error is because it is looking for the RAT module in one of the radios that is missing.

Is this an 'SP' radio? Does it look normal? It may be missing the dual band configured cable. The only time I have seen the RAT 1 error is when the early USSS radios were removed from the emergency button function and the radio was trying to TX the emergency over the repeater.

USUALLY a 'Fail 001' is because the radio is programmed wrong, but it could genuinely be defective.

Like above, try to read it, and clean up the codeplug to the minimum options, minimum configuration and check the bandsplit and frequencies of the radio and the board to make it happy. Doesn't do any good to recap if the MLM is honkered.
