xts2500 external mic audio problem

Post by kb9suy »

Evening everyone on the board,
Here is my problem looking for some insight. I picked up a used xts2500 vhf model 3 portable radio. I'm sure it's a panther radio. I was using it as a back up radio when working as a chiefs aid or IC. I never used a external mic on the radio just the internal. Radio works awesome no problems. Well I tried using a external microphone on it and here is the problem. I can key the radio and receive audio but have no transmission audio. I checked all cps setting and found nothing different from my uhfs radio programming. I tried multiple different mics which worked on my uhf radio. So I replaced the internal ribbon cable with a new one and still no mic audio. Now Im thinking a board issue. Any ideas?

First tip is to never use a Panter radio in a mission critical situation. As an IC you may very well need to TX life safety information and if an out and off call was missed someone could get killed. They are just fine for ham, or non mission critical use.

You have already ruled out the first thing i would have tried, The problem may be in in the flex connector itself. I have fixed a lot of them for bad connectors that are 123 radios.

That was my second guess. If it benches up and tunes fine I have no problem using it. I rather use that then some crappy ht1250. My radios out perform most of the radios on the fire ground anyways.

I remember using a speaker mic on the radio before and it worked so it was something recent that stopped functioning.
