HPN4007C Desktop Power Supply

Post by ASTROMODAT »

Help!

I am looking for any technical information, such as schematics, circuit theory, etc. for the Motorola HPN4007C power supply for my mid-power APX7500 desktop radio. The Motorola literature that comes with this unit is devoid of any such information, albeit it does clearly show that it is an "ASTEC AE210-3101/501AE" switcher. I previously was told that it was a dropped shipped item made by Astron, but that turned out to be incorrect.

I tried the normal routine of consulting with Parts ID, and the Moto Tech support folks, but all to no avail. Since it is a drop ship item, these normal paths seem to be of little or no use.

BTW, I must say that I am pleasantly surprised at how well this little PS works! It is completely silent (with no headache causing fan, such as Lambda switchers always have, with no thermal switch to quiet them whilst in monitor or receive mode), and it is extremely clean. I looked at it on the scope, and it is very impressive for a cheap little P/S. Its regulation is also very good. In going from no load to 9.5 amps (at 54 watts output from the APX7500), the voltage dropped from 14.10 to about 13.95. Not bad at all. I also really like the attached DC power cord. It has a nice hearty sized ferrite unit integrated into the supply side end of the cord, and it has a very nifty connector for the radio's SAE power input jack. It also has an interesting set of flying leads (red and black, with male insulated SAE connectors)) for any miscellaneous AUX DC power needs. The included Motorola “manual” (if you can call it that!) says that these leads are meant to be used to power the 05 control head on the mid-power radio. No complaints about this product, except for the lack of decent documentation.

In speaking with ASTEC on the phone, they simply said that the HPN4007C is a Motorola product, and it has long since been MD'ed (Not sure that I believe this!). Kind of interesting, since it is still Motorola's only P/S available for their mid-power, high tier radios. Go figure...
