XTL-5000

Post by tuckerm »

I have an option to buy an XTL-5000 for a price around $900-$1000. It's a dash mount, but i'd like to convert it to a remote head mount.

Is there anything bad about these radios? Is the XTL-2500s newer...should I wait and get one?

Here's the specs:
VHF 136-174
model M2oKSS9PW1AN
FC 540201-001000-0 which breaks down to:
G806 ASTRO IMBE Digital Operation
G114 Enhanced Digital ID Display
W969 Hardware Multikey Encryption
W12 Preamp
G48 Conventional Systems Operation
W947 Packet Data Interface
FW R14.00.03
DSP R14.00.00
UCM R05.07.10 DES-OFB/DES-XL
radio has model/ser tag but flash code doesn't match the tag

radio w/O5 head
mic
speaker
bracket

Is it easy to convert this to a remote head mount, if so, what all would be required?

Thanks for helping guys, Motorola radios are a whole different ball game and I'm just trying to learn more.

The XTL5000 is a fine radio. You might be better off in obtaining a whole O5 control head from "escomm" here on
this site. He has a bunch of the O5 heads available. Then all you will need is the kit to modify the front of the radio,
the control cable and the power cable for the back of the head. Don't forget the head mounting bracket. Depending
on your ability to purchase directly from Motorola or having to go through a dealer or service shop will determine the
actual cost of the parts you need.

I have a few new remote kits available, through M, it is a quite expensive change over.

The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...

So, since this has an O5 control head on it now, can that be taken off or do I need to buy a separate one?

Depending on the model # of the head will determine what CHIB ( control head interface board) you will need, the old style is not available anymore, you would need to find someone who has one. I have several old CHIB's and a few new ones as well.

What about a speaker? How would I connect that to this remote setup I'm trying to do.

has anyone tried to go the other way? Take a trunk mount and make it a dash mount. I've got a spare mobile I'm looking to make a desktop unit on the cheap. My first attempt looked like crap due to the 700 feet of cable everywhere.
