Can this be done...........and if so, HOW????

Post by nick.dejohn »

Ok here's one for everyone. I have a Motorola MTR2000, VHF, 100 Watt set up as a Base Station. I have a Motorola CDM750, Lowband 42-50, 60 Watt attached to it via a RICK Contoller to make a cross band system. Our department primarily operates on a VHF system and need to have access to a Low Band Frequency on a daily basis. However, this setup "need" has kinda of changed a little. What I would like to do with the equipment I have is have the ability, either with MDC, DTMF, whatever, be able to channel the steer the low band mobile to another channel and transmit/receive through that low band channel, off of the same VHF Frequency on the new channel. What this would allow me to do is add another frequency in the low band mobile radio that we now need to have the ability to talk on available through the VHF cross band system.

If anyone knows of a way to accomplish this, or needs more info, let me know.

I would be interested in doing this if the cost was mininal to do so.

Thanks,
Nick

Hello:
Im no expert by any means on eigther radio and its setup capabilities as you have but wondering if you need to look into possibly getting the Motorola M216 Mobile which has the channel steering ability in it .
I recall from past postings the ch steering in the M216 while if im corect the Maxtrac as an example did not.
The M216 was available in VHF and UHF as well as 800 but no lo band as i recall.
But i believe the channel steering capability was in the 28 pin eprom of the Radius M216 on the logic bd and therefore with reintiation ect put into a Low band maxtrac to gain the ch steering feature in the lo band version could be done also if needed.
Would take more than just swapping a prom i know but could be done if you were so inclined .
Checking my notes i have written in my Radius M216 repair manual i have thefollowing info added.
Radius M216 prom with channel steering capability = HLN9499B - version V21.01
I thought at the time id need to use the steering abity to change channels some day but since way back then i have not yet seen the need for anyone here i suport for the ch steering ability.
As a side note i do have in stock a good HLN9499G version V21.01 prom that i can read and burn a copy of .
Now wioth 12.5 Narrow band coming into play youd need to think about the M216 VHF mobiles ability to comply when Narrow band gets implemented .
I do know that Motorla has a 12.5 Narrow Band conversion kit for the Radius M216 that can be used if the RF bd is version HLD4321C or later and HLD4322C or later =Its part number is HLN9575.
The MOL will list it for the GM300 line ect but DOES state in the instruction sheet of this kit the following info.
NOTE :
These conversion kits can also be used on limited versions of the Radius M100 / M200 / and Maxtrac mobile radios .
The VHF RF bd must be HLD4321C or later and HLD4322C or later.
The kit contains all needed parts to convert and is an easy conversion to do .
No complicated tasks for a seasoned bench tech or the experienced person with good desolder and resolder abilities.
Then its been discussed at great length the legal issue of a Narrow band conversion kit versus a factory manufactureed rig.
Im not advocating doing or not doing .
this is a decision of yours to make.
THIS POSTING WAS POSTED AS INFO TO HOPEFULLY HELP THE OP WITH OPTIONS OR IDEAS IN THERE QESTION ONLY AND NOT MEANT TO RILE ANYONE UP .
So please do not flame me over it as its intention is to spark ideas only in the OPs venture for answers .
I do however welcome coments and other ideas from others on your ideas ect of this very topic for learning purposes if respectfully submitted towards all.
Sorry about that rambling but ancient past postings of the old days have tainted me towards the old days which have greatly improved in todays batlabs and i feel the need to explain the posting to elimnate upsetting anyone out the there in batlabs land as it is not my intentiopn.
Hey thanx for reading and your input.

All your M216 info is correct, but the CDM will also do channel changing, and is NB compliant so he can certainly use it to do what he needs. There is actually already an identical thread in the system infrastructure forum from Nick on this, which I will merge together with this one when time allows. For now, I'll lock this one & refer people to the Infrastructure forum for any further replies to the OP.
