Hello :
Motorola sometime back introduced the expand audio in the M1225 mobile and from the brochure claimed it even enhanced or cleared up the recieved rx audio from another radio when using the option.
My qestion is -( Both radios are set at 25 khx wide band in this senario ) What happens if a radio txing in the expand option mode and a radio with out expand option recieves it ( As in what does it sound like)
Was the expand option only used in 25 khz txing radios or was it available in both N/b and W/b ?
Whats everyone elses experience been with this expand option ?
Thank you

Expand is used on the 2.5 khz deviation only.. usually!!
Sort of a different pre emphasis on transmit to try to over come the poorer signal to noise on "narrowband".

Re: Motorolas M1225 Expand option with other radios ?
Hello :
Thanx for the input Will.
So in your opinion would you run expand with the new upcoming 12.5 narrow band at 2.5 khz or would you run without it ?
I have not played with the option and have no experience with it at all.
Im looking at eigther running GM300 s at narrow band on a customers system at there reqeust or the M1225 set for 12.5 narrow band.
The reason im qestioning this is that if i run GM300s that do not have the expand option along with some M1225s with the option would this be a problem and if so what type of problem would i expect to see.
Im thinking id see half rx audio on the GM300s from the M1225s txing with expand posibly ?
I realize i can run M1225s with out the expand and may do so to be compatible with the GM300s if i mix them into the system.
Otherwise im considering running M1225s only set with the expand option if it actualy does improve comunications to warrant doing so with no GM300s .
Whats your thoughts on this situation ?
Thank you

I think it was just a fancy name for companding and nothing more.

Re: Motorolas M1225 Expand option with other radios ?
Personally I think the Hear Clear audio sucks. I turned it off in my 900 Spectra. I try not using it, on all of our HT and CDM radios it's also off, especially when using it with mixed brands of radios it makes the audio sound worse. Probably the reason Motorola came up with it

Hello:
Well i cant say i have heard a lot of bad about the expand option but havent had anyone say whether it was better eigther.
So i qeuss ill have to just program up a few radios and try it both ways to see for myself.
Always wondered about Ms claim that it improved the recieve audio on a 12.5 khz narrow band radio to sound better than a normal 25 khz radios audio .

It's basically audio companding for use in narrowband systems. Essentially, companding is HearClear and Xpand. It's all the same thing.
I can't stand it.
