Get yourself a Comtelco antenna. They are using copper elements. Unlike AS, Maxrad, ect that use copper plated steal wires for elements.

I like Comtelco's mobile antennas, but I also use Diamond's X50, X100, and X150
fixed units with great success. I've had two of the X50 units up and running for more
than five years, one of them at 4,000 feet elevation on a mountain where the weather
can be severe and both are still working fine.

Tom,
You are lucky the quality of the Diamond, Comet, base antennas has gone to the very poor end in the last couple of years.
There quality control seems non existent. We had to replace most of the ones that were installed on the hospitals for ARES comms in the last year.
The dualband Comtelco antennas are working so much better than the Diamond, Comet antennas ever did.
By the way we took photos of the new and bad Diamond antennas, and they are available..

Re: VHF Fiber glass Base antenna
Will,
Based on your report I will no longer recommend these units to anyone seeking advice. I also have a really
long, maybe 11 feet or so, 900 mHz fiberglass vertical that I think was made by Comet, but that one has also
been on the roof for about four years. The two Comtelcos I'm using are UHF "pucks" on NMO car roof mounts, and
I've found Comtelco to be good people to deal with who ship immediately and offer hams decent discounts.
