Spectra FL 01/90

Post by QUEENSEMT »

Hi everyone,

I know that this problem has been covered before in these forums and i have looked over and over again and tryed everything that i have seen, so my dismay nothing has worked. If anyone can help please do, Thank you for your time.

So what is going on is:

I bought a high powered vhf spectra with a w4 head and recently had it programmed by a Motorola dealer for my needs (ems). We tested the unit after he programmed it and everything worked. I installed the unit in my car yesterday and when i finally got everything in, i turned the unit on and got a sys check --> FL 01/90 loop. I know that i have a good ground, all of the fuses are good and i had the head checked, it was all good. If anyone has any ideas at all please let me know.

Thank you very much!

The first thing you must always ask on a newly acquired Spectra [even if it works fine] is "were the caps replaced"? In life we will pay taxes, die, & Spectra caps will fail. There are plenty of posts here on other possible causes. There are members here who are very familiar with the Spectra. Will comes to mind, as he saved one of my Spectra's from a certain death. Check, double check, and triple check the connections on the control head and the radio. That code means that the control head can't talk to the radio, so make certain that the control cable is plugged in at both ends (unplug and reconnect it to be sure), and also make sure that the radio drawer has power connected to it. If you or someone you know has a voltmeter, you can check that the power cable is supplying power.

FL01/90 is a serial bus failure. It basically means the control head and radio are not communicating with each other.

The most common cause is the control head having power (orange, green wires), but the radio not having power (big red wire). If you're absolutely sure you have good power to the radio the next thing I would suspect would be the control cable from the head to the radio. Are you using the cable used when it was programmed and tested? If not is the cable the correct one and is it good? Have you put a screw through the cable during installation? Connectors all seated well?

Ah.. DPL snuck in while I was typing.. I'll post this anyway, but it's pretty much what he said.

Are you running it straight to the battery and fusing it?

yes, but somewhere in the wire im losing power. i used a voltmeter to see if i was getting power and it does not seem like i am. i tested it right after the fuse as well, and it was working, so its somewhere between the fuse and the end of the wire....
