Syntor X9000 UHF 450-470 no receive

Good morning,

I have two Syntor X9000 UHF 450-470 high power radios that are exhibiting the same symptoms. They both have excellent transmit power and audio. My service monitor shows over 80 watts, clear audio and they are stable with frequency. The problem is both have absolutely no receive. I crank the signal generate all they way up and nothing. I can read and write to both of them with RSS so everything else seems fine. They both came from the fed govt and am wondering if:
1. Possible antenna relay and how do I test for that?
2. Could they have somehow disabled the receive? (not likely but just asking?)

Can you unsquelch the receiver and hear noise? If they had the DVP option in them then the receive path is broken and went to the DVP box and back to the receiver audio section.

Will,

Yes I can unsquelch the radios and get noise. How do I correct it if I have no DVP box? All I have are the drawer units

I have seen 2 other problems with the Syntor X9000 radio in the past. The first one was easy to fix. Symptom was no RX until I transmitted. Then the RX would work fine until you powered off the radio. The fix was to start from scratch and create a new load for the EEPROM. I started by selecting the "8" in the menu to create a new load. Had to enter in all the channel (mode) information and write it back to the radio. After that, the RX worked just fine.

The second problem was a bad voltage regulator (think it was 9 volts) that controlled part of the RX rf chain. Had to make a new regulator and put it all back together. Was a pain to pill the circuit board where the ceramic regulator was mounted.

What frequency are you trying to program them with? Are you sure the VCO is locked?

Are you sure the radio is 450-470 range? So many federal surplus radios are the mostly useless 403-430 MHz range.

I once had some federal surplus radios in which some varmint had removed the UHF preamps before piling them on the surplus pallet. No receive on those either, found out why when I took the covers off.

I read both radios and got the 450-470 range. I also checked with service monitor and get solid TX on several freq's in that range. I built new codeplugs from scratch and get the same results.....85W out and deaf RX.

You are going to need a signal generator and start poking around in the radio. I always start with the IF. Inject a signal at the IF frequency and see if the radio hears that. Then start working your way back towards the antenna.

I do have some manuals in PDF that your welcome to if your email can handle that size. They are large in the order of 23 to 35 Megs each. I will do a simple search and see if I can find where I downloaded them from.

I had a chat with my local Moto dealer radio tech and he is leaning towards possible jumper settings since both radios were fed radios and both have exactly same problem. Can anyone tell me the correct procedure to take this from a DES external box to a "normal" X9000 configuration. He didn't have any of the manuals that would have the proper settings (jumpers, solder bridges, etc...). I am going to spend some time with it this weekend.

You want Non-Securenet, UHF and Conventional on JU100 through JU505 and JU516. I assume trunking is dead for these old radios. If the U502 EEPROM chip is 24 pins (4 unused pins in the socket) then you have a 2k EEPROM and if U502 is 28 pins yo have an 8k EEPROM. The above web page also has links to location drawings for the soldered in jumpers on the bottom of the board.

If you open the top radio lid there is a small hole in the RF circuit board with a red VCO unlock LED inside it pointed up through the hole. If this LED is lit up, then you do not have a VCO lock. Since the Rx IF frequency shift uses a different VCO range, it is possible the Tx VCO might lock and the Rx VCO will not lock. If the Rx VCO does not lock you will not receive anything at all. If the radio is scanning, the VCO unlock LED will be flashing at a high enough rate between VCO lock/unlock cycles for each scan frequency that it will appear to be on all the time (do not scan while checking for Rx lock). If you need help finding this LED just change modes and it should flash.

Unless the radio has a model number or chassis number that ends with SPxx (xx is a 2 digit number):

then there is nothing in the radio setup that would prevent the Rx after you remove any Securenet programming from the radio.

However, there could be a special U501 EPROM part number that might cause trouble:

Check your U501 number against the numbers listed on the above page. It was the earlier Syntor X that had special/custom audio path wiring for Securenet that caused Rx audio disconnection without the special control head. The Syntor X 9000 uses internal electronic audio switches that reconfigure the audio paths under program control.

This is why the radio code plug programming and U501 firmware is critical for normal Rx operation in the X9k. Of course SPxx radio versions can change everything.

DUH! I also forgot if you have Rx decode PL programmed then you will not receive anything until a Tx with the correct PL is sent. You could use the control head monitor function, or make sure the microphone hang-up function works (has not been modified by the government) and take the microphone off its clip to test the Rx.
