Quantar Audio Programming

Post by Tim »

Hi Folks,

Well, we're in the midst of re-programming our radios for narrowband, but have an issue:

Our dispatcher's radios have not yet converted, so they still use 5khz audio. If I change our repeater
now to 12.5khz BW & 2.5khz audio, then the QCII tones are distorted (no surprise).

I note in the Quantar's programming that one field is the 'TX Rated Deviation', and can be
2.5, 4, or 5kHz.

Also, the Receive channel BW can be selected separately between 12.5, 12.5-15, and 20-30kHz.

Could I still set the receiver to the 25-30khz so the tones won't clip, and have the max output
from the repeater 2.5kHz? It appears that I can do that now and still have everything play
nicely together. I can change the RX channel spacing later, after the dispatcher's radios have
been reprogrammed.

Thanks,

Tim

Yes, you can (rx WB, tx NB)

OR

You can touch the dispatch radios first, and then NB the Quantar.

I would seriously check the dispatch radios deviation. All the Quantars I've narrowbanded could handle 3khz of tone deviation without distortion. They started getting crunchy after 4khz input.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the info.

That's what it looked like - I'll go back up to the site tomorrow & re-prog.

I don't have any access to the dispatcher's radios - actually, we get dispatched
from two separate counties, depending on where the call is. So keeping the
repeater WB RX & NB TX until everybody is NB will work fine.

I can re-program all of our handhelds & mobiles as narrowband channels, so the QC channel
should work ok going through our repeater.

Yes, their tones are a bit hot. (again, I don't have control over them).

Thanks again,

Tim
