XTS5000 USB error

Post by n9upw »

I've got one XTS5000 that Windows will not recognize when connected via USB. When I connect the USB programming cable I get a "Windows does not recognize this USB device" error. I tried installing the XTS driver manually and after installation of the driver Windows says that there is a problem with the device and it has stopped the device. Anyone else run into this with an XTS? This was only one of 300 radios that I just updated that I had a problem with so it's not the cable or computer. Unfortunately I don't have a computer with a COM port to try programming it with a RS232 cable.

take a pencil eraser to the terminals on the side of the radio and make shure they are making a good contact. the software recognizes the radio, not the cable

I've cleaned the contacts and still no luck. Still getting the same error. I've included a pic of the error I'm getting, hopefully this will help. Just wondering if this is a connector problem that can be fixed with a re-case or is this some type of CPU error in the radio?

From the error, the driver may be missing or not installed.

I had 4 brand new original XTS5000 cables a few years ago and all were the same model and revision cables and all were purchased direct from Motorola and only 1 of these 4 cables acted like a PITA but only with one brand new FPP model III radio and only on various setups.

One PITA setup was with this pain in the A$$ FPP model VHF radio and PITA cable was on a laptop but only with ASTRO25 CPS, tuner worked fine with this radio and cable.

All of the radios and all 4 cables worked 100% with my desktop while ASTRO 25 tuner failed with only one cable and one FPP radio on another desktop but this time using our legal issue of ASTR25 Depot Tool on another PC while all other cables and radios tested worked fine on this other PC.

And of course the one cable that I grabbed from the lot to take to a demo to use with an Aeroflex R3920 analyzer connected with all but one of the 3 XTS5000's being demo'd.

It was then that I was swearing up and down at Motorola and once back at the lab I was able to read all radios with all 4 cables on my desktop, I even had success with the cable and radio tagged as being a problem child.

Next we opened each cable up and compared them side by side and there was nothing visible component wise so I set the PITA cable and radio aside and told my boss to send them back to Motorola so I never had to look at it again.

I never heard if we received credit even though I cracked the cable open, at this point I didn't give a damn anyway.

I then went out and had some real Sonoran Mexican food and margaritas with the wife and 3 months later I resigned never to have to work with cheap A$$holes who tried to integrate Motorola radios into avionics packages and put their name on it instead of designing from the ground up like it should be done.

Man it's nice not having to deal with Motorola professionally anymore, if a Motorola radio is being a PITA to me now I can simply take it out and use it for Skeet practice and then go out and have margaritas and mexican food afterwards.

Try some bullets and margaritas, I guarantee you'll feel much better afterwards.

Just an update to those who are following, I was unable to get the radio to read or write with a different USB cable and I was also able to get my hands on a RS232 cable that didn't work either. I was able to swap cases with a known working case that also didn't work. So it was sent off to the depot and I'll report back what they find. Thanks to all.
