MSF5000 and scanning receiver

Post by Doug »

Anyone around the board ever mess with an MSF5000 and a scanning receiver? I'm kind of looking for someone who has dealt with some of this stuff. I'm comfortable with working around the 5000 and have all the necessities, just looking for alittle guidance.

Are you talking about having the MSF5000's receiver scan, or are you talking about connecting an external scanner receiver to an MSF5000? Can't tell from the way you've worded the post.

Hello Bob,
Long time....First of all let me say that I'm sorry to those following this post for it's length, I am trying to cover all points.
I'm actually messing with the MSF receiver. After a couple hours of messing around yesterday these are my findings to this point. The station started out as a base station with a 5Mhz split between tx/rx, with a firmware of 5.45 in both the sscb and the ttrc boards. At this point I converted it to a working repeater the receiver wasn't the best I've seen but it is certainly a good start off point (at some point I'm going to bring from commercial to ham bands anyway) The receiver is currently at xy8.0250Mhz and the transmitter is at xy3.025Mhz. I created 2 more modes one with xy8.000Mhz rx and xy3.0250 tx the second at xy8.0500Mhz rx and xy3.0250Mhz tx. From this point I went into the scanning receiver portion of the rss and enabled the 3 modes for scan both rx and tx and wrote to the station. The station rebooted with no error codes and from my DMP panel I've enabled D2 channel 0 and listening through the dmp speaker low and behold it's scanning the 3 frequencies with the rx vco light slightly pulsing but still staying in a locked state. The sad thing is that it's not repeating. I can force into tx from the panel but I loose my scan bit. That's where I left it for the day, perhaps today I'll get a chance to go back at it. I was thinking last night that when I go back to it I'm going to look at J2900 and J2901 on the ttrc board and look for changes of state while it is set up in the scan mode.
Bob, do think this is the right direction to go or should I head off another way?
Thanks for any input that you may have.

If you have an RSS manual, check the info about the Scanning Repeater function. It says:

"At the time of the release of this RSS, there were plans to add the ability of that station to repeat while scanning. Currently this field has no affect on station operation. The current released version of SSCB firmware (R5.45) and all previous versions DO NOT REPEAT WHILE SCANNING.

Once the Scanning Repeater option is added to the SSCB firmware (no approximate release date at this time), this field will have the following function:

The Scanning epeater field can only be ENABLED if the station is configured as a Repeater (REPEATER OPERATION field in the Station/Model Options Screen is set to ENABLED). If ENABLED, the station will keyup during SCAN when a received signal on one of the scan-enabled channels is detected. If DISABLED, the station will scan as normal, but will not key."

So since your station is NOT repeating when scanning, I'd say that's the expected result. If you set it up as a base station and cross-connect a COR output to a PTT input, then it might act as a repeater and scan at the same time. Certainly an external repeater controller should let you have scanning.

I had a feeling it would go that way, sometimes it takes someone to look over what you've done and point out something that has been overlooked. At some point I'm going to contact you off list and explain why I'm pursuing this venture.
