Looking for mounting options for a rohn 65g tower

Post by racerman1cars »

Hi, I have 60' of tower: 2-20ft sections and 2 10' sections. i was thinking about taking a 10' secion and putting in concrete 4' deep as per rohn.some one mentioned a concrete slab with j bolts to mount the legs to, that doesn't sound as safe a 4' section in concrete. Any thoughts on this?

If you bury a section in concrete, it will get corroded by the concrete itself. Might last 15 years before cancer sets in. The galv doesn't protect it. Better to buy the base plate, or fab one yourself, or bury J bolts into the concrete to be pins in the legs. You still need to guy except if you attach it to a building about 20 ft up.

I wouldn't worry about the leg being ate up, but would be really concerned about moisture collecting in the legs and then freezing. It splits the legs open on every installation I have ever seen where the tower section was set in the ground or cement. The last one I saw was down in the New Orleans area this past Christmas trip I made. All 3 legs had splits in them. The legs need a way of draining out the condensation that will collect on the inside of the tower legs.

Your going to do as you want, but at least you have a couple of comments to at least slow you down on using a tower section and just plopping it into the ground.

When I put my tower in, I did it per spec on the Rohn site: you put down a 4 inch bed of gravel first, with the bottom of the tower in the gravel. Then you put the concrete over that. The gravel will provide drainage for the tower.

As for corrosion, if you use a sacrificial anode in the grounding system that will greatly help the longevity of the system - find yourself a chunk of magnesium and drive that into the ground, and bond it to the grounding system.
This is my opinion, not Aeroflex's.

Thanks for the answers guys, Wowbagger That is the method I am going to use, a guy here in town is the one that said use anchors in the concrete, that would 12 studs comming out of the concrete. Where can I get the sacrificial Anode?

If nothing else, go to a plumbing store and get a sacrificial anode for a water heater.

And some re bar......The J bolts are wired to the re bar to hold the re bar and j bolts in place.
