XTL5000 with David Clark Headset problem

Post by troynelsen »

We have a couple of trucks with XTL5000 Astro radios and they have been interfaced with David Clark headsets, preamp adapters, 6 pin cannon plugs direct into the accessory 25 pin connector. The problem I'm having is that when transmitting, I only get a carrier, but no voice. Both trucks have the same problem, and I have tried to switch headsets with no success. The install was done by a mechanic several years ago. The wiring seems to coincide with the pin out diagram. All other internet searches I have done keep coming up with a fix for 26 (or more) accessory plugs. Anyone have any problems/tips/better directions for this? Thank you!

There are a couple of issues that are probably biting you in the lower posterior. There are some software settings that need to be changed in the XTL5000 radio software to correct the external mic input gain.

Go to the radio configuration selection in the menu.

Click on the RADIO WIDE tab.

In the ADVANCED tab, there is a "AUX PTT AUDIO Source" selection down lower on the page. There is only 2 selection to choose from. If you don't get any audio after doing the gain settings change, come back to this and use the other selection.

In the "TX AUDIO PER MODE" tab, go about half way down the page to the Aux input selection. The default is to have the "AGC" checked. Un check the 3 AGC blocks. Go to the right and set the gain settings to the max of +12 db. I generally do this for all three of the selections of ANALOG, DIGITAL and SECURE.

Now write the changed settings back to the radio.

Your TX audio should be going into the radio on pin 23 of the DB25 connector. Ground is pin 14 and the emergency on pin 15 should be grounded. Pin 21 is fixed RX audio, but might not be enough to drive the headset your using. PTT is on pin 16.

Make a note here that once you get the TX audio working to save the codeplug to your computer. If you have a master template being used for all radios, make sure the template gets changed. These setting changes will not effect the local control head mic audio. It only will effect the TX audio connected to the accessory connector.

The aux mic audio is gated by the aux ptt. Any other PTT will result in no audio.
