Rib to Radio Cable- simple (not)

Post by airboss »

OK, I thought I would make a spare RIB to Radio (Maratrac) cable. I used this diagram:
http://www.batlabs.com/images/maxpin.gif

The diagram does not call out the exact pin numbers of the RJ-45 connector but it looks like 25 pin connector 1 to pin 4 of the RJ-45 connector. Also the 25 pin connector pin 15 to RJ-45 pin 7. Then short the 25 pin connector pins 11 and 4. Seem pretty simple to me, but it does not work.

I have a "good" (purchased) RIB to radio 25 pin connector to RJ-45, and my whole setup works just fine with the RSS. But not with my assembled cable made to the batlab drawing.

There must be something I'm missing in that simple 25 pin Rib to RJ-45 cable drawing. :o

Compare the two cables side by side. Should be the same.

Also there is a wire on pin 12 of the DB 25 to connect to the radio's 12 volts, it powers the RIB. Not shown on BatLabs.....

Also see the updates/component value changes in the RIB:http://batlabs.com/images/rib_mod.jpg
Makes the RIB match the RS232 Serial standard.

Well, I answered my own question. I dis-assembled the WORKING RIB 25 pin to RJ45 cable. It is far from the batlabs diagram (for a Maratrac)

Leaving the Pin 25 towards the RJ45 is:
Pin 1 - black
Pin 4 to 11 shorted with wire
Pin 16 - red + 2K resistor in series with white wire (two connections here)
Pin 24 - green

Twisted Pair ethernet cables terminate the same into the RJ-45 connector (normally)

That does not sound correct correct. What is the pinout of your RJ45 connector? NOTE: Motorola numbers the RJ 8 pin connector backwards from the RJ45/T568B.

DB25 Pin on RIB:
1 is ground, correct.
4 to 11 is the bias jumper, that is correct.
24 and 15 are BUSS+ tied together in the RIB.
12 is 12 volts into the RIB for power.

Maratrac programming jack from the service manual:
1 B+ 12 volts 8 on RJ45
7 BUSS+/SCI+ 2 on RJ45
4 GND 5 on RJ45

So you see the backwards numbering that confuses everyone........

Now that I'm looking at standard twisted pair and standard RJ45 wiring - this aftermarket cable that I have (that works) did not use twisted pair cabling. There is no red or black in the standard twisted pair wires.

Now, I will have to get out the magnifier and see what is what (on the after-market RIB to Radio cable).

I'm going to make one up using your service manual guidance...

thx!

Probably the flat cable that has a different color code VS pinout.
