Wireless ethernet connection for TRBO
Goodmorning all,
I have a very stupid question, please keep in mind that I am not all that IP savvy. I have a need to get a trbo site (peer) up and running kinda quickly, but only for a short while. The roof top where it will be located doesn't have a fiber, cable, or ip pull to it, but I have access to the local cable providers wifi service.
Is there a device that I can deploy that operates on wifi, that I can program to work on my cable providers wifi and will provide me an ethernet network port.
I am trying to avoid the cellular stuff for the moment, trying to keep the cost down for a temp demo.
Thanks, Rob

Re: Wireless ethernet connection for TRBO
Maybe - if the wifi device you use to connect to the cable isp has port forwarding settings.
Re: Wireless ethernet connection for TRBO
We have our DR3000 connected bij wifi, but in the router where we gett the signal of has bin configured with port forwarding.
Zo a free signal you can connect but it will not work if you can't configure the router, and we have used a range extender on de repeater side.
The repeater is connected to the range extender by utp cable, the range extender is picking up a wifi signal at 50m from the repeater site.
A frind of my is living in that appartment building next to the one where our repeater is.

As long as it is going to be a peer and not a master, it should be fine. You should be able to call the cable company, give them the mac address of the XPR/ You will need a wireless to ethernet bridge. I would look at either Ubiquity or Engenious. The bridge is a dumb box that pretty much will convert wireless back to Ethernet. There should not be a requirement to register this box with the cable company since the XPR will be the device requesting access (determined by the MAC address given).FMROB wrote:Goodmorning all,

The bridge will have to be pre-programmed using a laptop and a web browser to act in bridge mode and connect to a specific SSID. Again, it should be pretty easy, but this is one of those if one piece breaks you are going to be at a loss troubleshooting it with the cable company since I'm sure this falls in to the unsupported category.
Your other option is using a cradlepoint and 4G - but you will have to do the math out on how many peers, the required bandwidth, etc. Keep in mind 4G adds latency as well.

Excellent, I will try out the Ethernet bridge thing. We have a few of the ubiquity units hanging around the office.
Thanks,Rob

These are the devices that I am using to connect my amateur DMR repeater to the internet:
Pepwave Surf200 http://www.microcom.us/surf200.html
Internet-go.com http://internet-go.com/ I bought the mifi at Walmart and activated on-line. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Internet-on-t ... G/20665535 It uses Sprint for connectivity and this is what attracted me to it - "Go Whenever Plan: No 30 day, weekly or daily expiration of megabytes" If you don't use the purchased data in 30 days it doesn't expire.
Took about 30 min to set the complete system up so everything talks to each other to include custom programming of the mifi to my liking.

Re: Wireless ethernet connection for TRBO
Mark, I have to assume latency is tolerable? Are you running as a peer or a master?

Re: Wireless ethernet connection for TRBO
I'm using on the MARC network as a peer and there have been no reported issues. I did some comparisons with 2 radios, one listening to the hardwired repeater that is in Plantation and mine that is in Boca at the same time and there was no difference in RX audio timing or performance.escomm wrote:Mark, I have to assume latency is tolerable? Re: Wireless ethernet connection for TRBO
Have you stayed under the 500 mb plan data limit for the $10 per month?

Re: Wireless ethernet connection for TRBO
Unfortunately no, at least not on MARC. It runs about 700 to 800mb monthly. It is cheaper for me to do the 3GB for $45 and just roll it from month to month.
Re: Wireless ethernet connection for TRBO
Interesting. For the $45 a month I can get a cable modem or dsl at a majority of my sites, so it wouldn't be worth it for that type of solution. But I could see that for a temporary site and the like. I might just do that for a demo site I have to do for about a week.
Re: Wireless ethernet connection for TRBO
I'd suspect your system would not pass anywhere near the amount of traffic as DMR-MARC..FMROB wrote:Interesting. Re: Wireless ethernet connection for TRBO
I don't pay $45 a month. The 3GB lasts about 4 months, so this breaks down to about $11 bucks a month. The 500MB doesn't make it month, so doing the lower upfront cost plan ($10/500MB) it is actually $20 per month that way. The 3GB plan does not expire after 30 days, so it lasts a while.FMROB wrote:Interesting. It really comes down to how much data you expect to consume.
Re: Wireless ethernet connection for TRBO
Ahh, ok. That sounds a bit better. I would have to sick some type of watchdog program to see how much one of our sites consumes in data. I might give this a try. Thanks, Rob
Re: Wireless ethernet connection for TRBO
An important distinction here is to know how many nodes. If Mark is running this with two nodes, then it's probably going to be "cheap" on the data side. You really need to read the Trbo Product Planner documentation and do the bandwidth calculations. The more repeaters online the more network bandwidth you need per transmission, which will change your rate of consumption with a wireless device pretty quickly.FMROB wrote:Ahh, ok. Alex,
Agreed. I will take a look at the planner, as this site that I am looking at will be hosting a IPSC box which will be 1 of 5, and at the site will be 3 additional boxes that will be LCP+/5 site system.
