I have been looking on Motorola withe papers about an error message: "No Comms", but i havent find anything about it.
I have analog radios working on a Type II protocol of a Smart Zone System, the models i have are XTS2250 as well as XTL5000, and some times the radio just show on the display the message "No Comms".
My radios are programmed to alert and display when Imbalanced Coverage, Site Trunking and Out of Range occurs, but this message..... doesnt alert at all!
I dont know why it occurs, but this happens just with a few radios and not at the same time, i only need to press PTT to force the radio to Tx and then the radio comes back alive again.
This behavior is weird because i have covergae of another site nearby, so when a Site Trunking occurs in my nearest site my radio switches to the other site 14 miles away from where i am withot problem at all, so i think this should be something related only with the radio instead with the entire system, when the message appears in one radio the site is in Wide Trunking and others radios are working just fine.
Any comment will be gladly accepted.

If your radio has old firmware, programming it with the latest CPS will not add any new features unless you have the latest firmware to match..
CPS = Customer Programming Software, Not CPS Software.

Re: Error Message : "No Comms" on display
So far so good Marc, i have being reading similar issues from 2007 and 2008, but this is my particular case:
I have seen the NO COMMS message at the very same repeater site, i have one XTL5000 and several XTS2250 working around and considering that the control channel is strong enough i am pretty sure that the radios hear it!, by the other way i think that there shouldnt be any problem for the radios to communicate with the system so imbalanced coverage shouldt be the reason (even if the tower amplifier doesnt work, the radios must be able to communicate with the site because they are at the same floor level and just around 10 feet away from the repeater site).
I havent seen if the message NO COMMS appears before the message OUT OF RANGE, but i have seen the NO COMMS for a long time.
By other hand, when one radio shows NO COMMS another radio is working just fine, thinking in a power amplifier issue affecting several radios just at a given time .....i dont know, plus, if a radio shows NO COMMS why it comes alive again just pressing the PTT button?
The codeplug version of the radios are 11, 15, 17, 19.
The system where my radios work is Smartzone, analog, Type II, no digital support (for now) and all of the radios are programmed to operate in type II only so it is not an issue related to programming (like having one personality for ASTRO for example).
This is something quite disturbing...

Re: Error Message : "No Comms" on display
Just thought I would update this older thread with some info that I recently received from Motorola on the "NO COMMS" error.
Symptom:
XTS5000 displays "NO COMMS" when on a trunking talkgroup
Error "NO COMMS" on the display of XTS5000
XTS5000 bonks when radio is keyed with the "NO COMMS" present on the display
Cause:
The "NO COMMS" message indicates that the radio has imbalanced coverage
Fix:
The radio is working as designed. There are 4 conditions in which the "NO COMMS" message will cease:
· The radio receives a successful affiliation response from the system
· The radio enters Failsoft operation
· The radios detects "Out of Range"
· The radio detects Site Trunking
Note
Imbalanced coverage means that the radio can receive from the control channel but can not connect to the system. The message will display when affiliation attempts has failed on all known sites
The Imbalanced Coverage Indicator can be turned off in the Astro 25 Portable CPS:
· Radio Configuration - Radio Wide - General - Imbalanced Coverage Indicator: No Indication

Re: Error Message : "No Comms" on display
If a system subscriber ID is duplicated, it will sometimes cause this NO COMMS display also. System may shake hands with the other unit with your ID and give them the blessing instead of you.
