Antenna connectors

Post by NodrogCop »

Does anyone have any suggestions for SO239 connectors? I just did a roof antenna, and am using a cheapo Rat Shack connector until I get something better.

I've never put a connector on (my partner always used to - he's sinced move), but I've crimped a lot of other stuff, etc.

Any help is appreciated -- and I only need 1 connector, so wholesale's not a good idea. :)

Suggestions:

1. Manufacturer: Amphenol or any other USA manufacturer. If it's foreign-made don't buy it. The "fit" tolerances and specs on foreign connectors are often 'way off compared what they're supposed to be.

2. Details: Teflon insulator in unit. (Look inside. If the insulating material is white that's Teflon; if it's tan/brown don't buy it.)

3. Don't crimp - - ever! - -solder, even if you have to hire someone to do it for you.

4. If connector is outside, finish by packing outside of connection with RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizer) which IS okay to buy at Radio Shack, if they have it/know what it is. RTV is a black oozy material that comes in rolls that you mold around the connector.

5. Use best grade of coax you can afford.

Also second the motion. Anther 'gotcha' is that the crimp-ons have too short a barrel to be able to tighten in a lot of locations, such as Mitrek, Micor, Maratrac.

If you want a decent crimp with a long barrel. RF industries RFU-505.
