I know this is going to be hard for some of you to believe, but I need to get in touch with someone who has experience programming a GE EDACS RANGR mobile radio with the S850 control head AND the UHF VRS system.

Programming the edacs radio (actually, the S850) has been done already, but now I'm trying to add on a UHF VRS system and I supposedly have the right kit. I've got the double decker radio mount, I've got the Y cable, and the adapter box that mounts to the side of the double radio mount, and I've got the UHF 1 watt VRS EDACS RANGR, and I enabled the VRS system in the S850 programming to turn VRS on and off via a designated key on the numeric keypad.

I know that the VRS is USUALLY operated in conjunction with the MPA/MPD "convertacom" or equivalent product, but I'm just trying to interface it with the 800 EDACS RANGR with no convertacom.

I'm having trouble with it. If I just hook up the VRS radio, the audio on the 800 radio mutes. Transmissions are TOO low power, not even 1 watt, (that can be handled if there's a problem), and they're also distorted.

And I can't shut the VRS off via its designated button, but sometimes I can turn it on with it.

If anyone here knows something about these systems, get in touch with me. I doubt there's anything wrong with the equipment because it was literally new in the box, and factory sealed. The very sparse manuals that came with it are no help at all.

HELP!!

Oh..the reason for this setup: so I can carry ONE radio (UHF Astro Saber) with me and monitor both the UHF channels I use and the public safety system with just ONE radio when I go somewhere. I'd rather carry an Astro Saber than my M-PA any day.
(Yes, I've got one of those, too. I may not like EDACS or the company that makes it, but when the stuff's cheap it's still the very best way to monitor an EDACS system. You KNOW I'm not into Radio Shack scanners!)

Hey Elroy do you have any programming manuals? If not I might be able to snag a copy for ya. The guy at the local shop owes me a favor. Just let me know which ones you'll need.

I don't think I have a programming issue, or if I do, it's secondary. I think I have a configuration issue because, as I mentioned earlier, these VRS systems are usually used in conjunction with a 'convertacom, GE style'. Removing the radio from the convertacom activates the VRS.

I don't have that setup. Delete the convertacom. I'm guessing that the wiring harness to the control head needs some modification to be used in my application, but I am only guessing. I certainly don't have the manuals.

You might try Hall Electronics at their website. You can get their 800 nimber and leave message if they are not in. Their techs are pretty libral and very informative. I have also called Comnet Ericsson and picked their techs brains for info. They too are very libral, not tight lipped like Motorola.
