HT1250s vs CPS, versions

I have heard that if you try to use a earlier ver of CPS on a radio it will not work if a later ver was used in the past.
IS that true??
If so can it be fixed??
Does anyone know what the latest ver is for CPS? Its not on the batlabs list.
Reason is if you get a used radio with a later flash you are having a bad day.
How about older radios, same question?

The latest is 6.01

Everyone claims that you can't use older RSS on a radio that's programmed with the latest, but I've already used 4.0 in my old laptop and successfuly read/programmed my HT1250 that I programmed with my desktop and 6.0

...don't ask me! I can't answer how or why.

It can depend. LCS for example will allow you to use several versions below the latest. I never tried using CPS 4 on a CPS 6 radio, I DID try CPS 4 on a CPS 5 radio, no go. Also tried CPS 5 on on a CPS 6 radio, no go there either.

At least 95% of the time, an older version will not be able to read a radio programmed with a newer version. It makes sense in a way, as the newer RSS may support features that the older RSS doesn't understand. Mostly, I think it's a money grab by Motorola, forcing us to buy the latest versions. We know it doesn't necessarily have to be that way, because the LAB RSS can usually read a radio programmed with any version regular RSS.

I'd be real leery of even trying to program a radio with older RSS knowing the general rule of backward incompatibilty in Motorola radios. I even wondered if the MCS2000 "bug" was a bug and not some engineering/marketing scheme to uncover illegitimate users of RSS and to see how many radios are not being programmed by Motorola shops. The general rule of the new regime from the mouth of a senior marketing person is that their products are to be sold and supported by MSS and authorized resellers and nobody else. You will start to see software that is very limited in its features so that major changes can only be effected at the depot level and at MSS's for a charge. Sounds a bit like early cellular policy.

Sounds illegal to me. I bet the FTC would like to know about this monopoly. Microsoft is nothing compared to what "M" is doing.

By the way....what is the "MCS2000 bug?"

Sounds more like paranoid to me. The HT/CDM series is the most feature rich product line Motorola has ever put out, and they've actually called the RSS "Customer Programming Software" (CPS). They don't seem to be shying away from letting end users program their own radios for now & the forseeable future. Astro, MCS, MTS have all gone the CPS route as well.

I'm not sure what "bug" he's referring to. Is it the possible codeplug corruption from mixing RSS versions mentioned in BatLabs? If so, it's not mentioned what the current programmed version was, nor which older version did the corrupting. From the wording, it sounds like they were trying to dump a codeplug into the radio, without attempting to read it first. It also takes the word of the "local Motorola dealer" (doesn't mention if it's an actual MSS or not, or if it was a salesman or a tech who determined it) as to the cause of the problem. I've never seen it happen, and I've dealt with a lot of those units. Maybe he's referring to something else?

The "other Big M"...Microsoft?? Yes, I'm sure Microsoft would be more than happy to spend their time writing small DOS & Windows programs, for a non-computer related product, whose estimated sales numbers are in the thousands worldwide. Get real!
