Allright, I'm online now. The new number solved my problems.

I set everything up and I got connected. I tried the test and nothing. Now I can't even log into the system.

All proxy and user info are set. Maybe password issue? John did I request a specific one? Can you PM me with that?

Ok, I am up and running. Got into the TEST and ECHO just fine, even without John setting up my requested password yet. Works really well. Not as much slack time as I though there would be. When testing with the ECHO, it was not much of a delay.

OK guys...

I can see several of you trying to log into the proxy but, you're NOT using the right settings.

So, lets get this straight.

If your BAT-PHONE number is 228-1234, your username is "2281234" and the same goes for your Authorization User.

Pager Geek, I can see you but, you'll never authenticate until you get your usernames straight (and as a result, nobody will be able to call you!)

Sending to 66.66.192.211 : 33611 (non-NAT)
Transmitting (no NAT):
SIP/2.0 401 Unauthorized

Notice that you're trying to authenticate as "thepagergeek"? That won't work. ;)

OK folks. I can see several of you trying to log in.

I must STRESS:

Your username and Authorization Username is your BAT-PHONE number WITHOUT the hyphen.

Okay, I'm having issues getting it to work here...

I set everything up the way you said... I setup DMZ on my router for the IP my computer is on, but X-Lite says it found a blocked firewall, and (to my knowledge) won't connect.

What gives?

Don't set up the DMZ. Just run it through the NAT.

I don't know that I can.

I can use port forwarding if I need to...but, what ports do I need to open up?

Okay, I managed to get connected

I made the correction to the SIP proxy, and then made a call to the echo line. I am impressed, my Adelphia connection has very low latency.

Guys,

Stop trying to make this harder than it is. Most "consumer" firewalls will work OUT OF THE BOX. If your computer can access the internet through your firewall, you'll be able to your X-Lite through it. I don't have any holes punched through my firewall at the house and I'm using TWO VoIP devices. One hard phone and one soft phone.

Just install the software, get your username and password straight (PAGERGEEK, I'm getting ready to block your IP address at our borders so I can see something BESIDES you trying to authenticate using the wrong username when I'm tailing the logs) and if THAT doesn't work, THEN start looking at the firewall.

Are you seeing me trying to log in? I keep trying (everything seems to be configured properly) but it keeps timing out on me.

Does it matter that my broadband connection is DirecWay 2-way Satellite internet?

OK, I got my laptop here to come up and work with bat-test and bat-echo.

however, I can't connect to individuals, and it still says login failed - but I can connect to bat-test and bat-echo....

Yeah, when I try to call you I get a Call Failed - 404 Not Found. Maybe that will help John get you setup OK.

OK. I found one thing that was keeping you folks from connecting to each other. I didn't have you added to the dialplan. I was kinda waiting on people to get authorization.

Once you get your authorization done, give me a call at 228-8888

Oh, and until it says, "Ready - Dial phone number" you aren't ready to do anything. Until you're authorized on the system, nobody will be able to call you.

Ok, for those having trouble, here is a tutorial based on John's original information:

Important!: Most standard home cable/DSL routers do not need to have any modifications made. DO NOT put your computer in a DMZ, and do not bother opening any ports. The X-Lite software along with your broadband modem, router and the settings below should work fine.

Configuration of X-Lite for connecting to the BAT-LINE.

1. Launch the program
2. Just above the "3" key on the telephone keypad in the program, you'll see a button that looks like a notepad or something. This is the menu button. Click on that button.
3. Double click on "system settings"
4. Double click on "Sip proxy"
5. You'll see something like "[Default]" Double click on it.
6. Set "Enabled" to YES
7. Set Display name to Whatever but, please include your BAT-nnnn number.
EXAMPLE: "David 911radio 228-0909"
8. Set username to your batphone number, IE; "228nnnn" (NO Hyphen)
9. Set Authorization User to your batphone number. (NO Hyphen)
10. Set password to the password you have requested.
11. Set Domain/Realm to "BAT-PHONE" (Hyphen Needed)
12. Set Sip Proxy to "sipproxy.enterzone.net:5060"
13. Set Use Outbound Proxy to NEVER
14. Set Send Internal IP to NEVER
15. Set Register to ALWAYS
16. Close out the menu (hit the X at top right)
17. Close out of the program
18. Restart the program

Here are some screen shots with instructions!

Hope this helps![

OK folks. This is REALLY not that hard.

So, if you are trying to connect, send me the following information in a PM:

1. The number you have been assigned.

2. The username you are using. If this is different than your 228nnnn number, I won't help you any further because I couldn't have been any more specific about what you must use as a username.

3. The authorization username you are using. Again, if this is different than your 228nnnn number, no further help - failure to follow simple instructions. :(

4. The password you are trying to use.

Again, for the people on the short bus:

If your number is BAT-1234 and you asked for "bat" to be your password, here is the username/pw info you would use:

username: 2281234
authorization username: 2281234
password: bat

What is so hard about this?

It looks like I probably won't be online for a little while - I have to see if I can get my school to open the firewall for me (X-Lite reports "Discovered Restricted Firewall") - which I doubt they will. But, I will be sure to sign on whenever I'm at home.

Thanks to John for putting this together!

Are you behind NAT? $10 says you are and the SIP packet isn't getting properly translated at the Layer 7 (application) level... :)

And as a result the returning audio is going nowhere... hence we can hear you but nothing's getting back

Yup... behind a Nat....

using a Sonicwall Tele3tzx...

I have something that allows the SIP transformations built into my firewall...

Care to drop me a PM with your screenname on one of the services and i'l drop you a message that way to take this off the board?

Alex,

Did you try BAT-TEST and BAT-ECHO and verify that they work?

Something else we might want to check are your STUN settings. Sundown knows a lot more about VoIP than I do so he can tell us how STUN works but, that might be the answer to your problems.

This is a problem with Asterisk. It's not a true SIP server. Internally it has it's own way of doing things, and has SIP "connectors" going to the SIP phones. The caller ID of a call going out gets stamped with the ID of the connector port going to you, which has the effect of essentially looking like you're calling yourself.

Means missed call lists and alike don't work like they should, and you can fake what "caller ID" there is by changing your display name :(

In other words... DO NOT trust the "caller ID" of a call on the system as it stands :(

I was just thinking about that. I wanted to get out of "beta" first though. KG6EAQ, will you send me a PM with the username/pw combo you're using so I can verify on this end? I see you trying to authenticate but, not making it in.

Wow! Had a nice conference call tonight with Alex, r0f, sundown and myself. This might actually take off folks! Now all have to do is get a Zaptel card for the Asterisk server and I can set up "Meetme" conference rooms. Then people can simply call into the "room" and chat with whoever happens to be in that room.

If you're one of the beta testers and you're still not working yet, let me know and we'll try to figure out what the problem is.
