Happy 2012 !
This is the first year that I did absolutely nothing on New Years Eve. No parties, no going out, just the old fashioned staying home.

It is off to a good start. The 80m NVIS dipole is up but there is no coax on it. Hope Cellphone shack is open today.

Saving up for an APX7000.
At my current savings rate, the world would've already ended LOL

Ok, I'm jealous, how did you manage a brand new ASIII ? I know there is a few on "That auction site" claiming to be brand new 800MHZ ASIII's ( that DO look brand new ) but with a simple fail code on them.

Lol, well maybe i got ripped off, hopefully not, but yes, Thats the one. Christmas cash burned a hole in pocket. Only catch is - I need to convert her to VHF, and preferably with an ultra short battery. So i have my work cut out for me. Always wanted a new one, but couldn't afford one at the time - Even back in the "Nick" days Do you think i got taken? Hopefully not. I don't mind putting a few bucks into a "new" one to get the rig I always wanted. It's a hobby to me - even though i hope to use her at work (Paramedic). Cheers, and a happy, healthy new year!

John - first off congrats on the new radio ! I would say you didn't get ripped off. The Fail code that's on the radio in the auction can be corrected by simply feeding a good codeplug into the radio. However, converting it to VHF is a completely different animal

As for super short batteries, there was a thread around here recently that someone had a VERY short saber battery on thier radio. (Edit - nevermind, seems that you've already read and posted in that thread

).
Good luck with your new ASIII ! I'm sure it will serve you for many years to come. I wish I held onto my ASIII.

Hey Mike, thanks for the good news. Yes, I'm aware that a band change will require a new vocon/ lab forced plug, and VHF board. (I
never played with high end stuff before) or new guts entirely. But i always wanted one that wasn't "butchered" unless i did it myself. Luckily, i have a friend who ownes a MSS (don't know if it'll help me) So with any luck, I'll have a "custom" VHF AS3.
Any info/ advice would be appreciated!
Happy, and healthy new year.
John

Ooops- and yes, i was looking for the shortest battery possible (That was one of my posts) I Just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, the Saber form factor!! Briefly having owned a used analog saber (that i just couldn't get to work- and unfortunately soon to be obsolete) I figured the AS3 would be a good choice. I've never played with "high end" stuff, And LOVING the Saber form, this was my Christmas wish (lol): To find a NEW one i could "play with" (band change/tweak) that i could not afford new in my younger years (before the Astro was even available) And i didn't mean "Vocon change". Instead, I meant forced codeplug with same model number, and VHF board change. PLEASE corrrect me if I'm wrong in for the band change info!)
Belated happy holidays, and a
Happy, safe, and healthy new years to all,
John

Hey not to get off topic here ( lol, most of my posts in this thread are SOOO off topic ) BUT :
Speaking of maratracs, when did Motorola STOP making them ? A friend of mine just picked up a VHF 110 watt model, and according to the second letter in the serial it was either made in 1977 or 2001 but there is no mention of what years the production run was for the Maratracs. Any ideas ?

Hi Mike. Your UHF ASIII is living a very pampered life here in Sunny South Florida. It never goes outdoors, it sits in an A/C environment, & cigarette smoke is never present. I have other radios that do the dirty work. LOL. GARY N4KVE
