WPLN4079BR battery condition behavior

Hello I have some bizarre behavior I'd like to see if anyone else has seen.
I have a couple of the WPLN4079BR battery conditioners with the cups for HT1000 batteries. All the batteries i have are NICD. I believe i'm running version 4.4 of the firmware (the rom inside my uni has "4.0 NiMH and NICD" on it, but the display says 4.4 when i power it up)
Anyway the problem is, the unit will only charge. When i put a battery in, i get the voltage reading and the "charge" legend is lit. Pushing the buttons on the unit does nothing. (its supposed to condition).
The problem is that ONCE it *did* condition a set of 5 batteries. Then immediately after that, it wont condition anymore.
I looked around inside the unit but there doesnt appear to be any damage, the connectors for the cups appear good etc. So i'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else who has one of these and if there's an easy fix?
Also if anyone has a manual for these i'd love to get a copy. (the original manafacturer iTech, no long has it online where it was posted here back in 2005).
Thanks
