DIRECT/REPEATER MCS2000

I'm ashamed to ask, but it's been too long so here goes. I'm real good with programing most ht's but on my MCS2000, I'm almost there. I programmed the encryption button for direct/ repeater, & that's exactly what the screen shows when I press the button. Now that "DIRECT/REPEATER" is displayed, how do I make the radio go into direct mode? The button to the left toggles back & forth between hi, & low power, but the direct/repeater switch doesn't toggle. So how do I get the radio into direct, & back. GARY N4KVE

Maybe a dumb question but are you on a repeater channe or on a simplex channel? I think that optiion is not available on simplex or recieve only channels. is the direct indicator lit up on the display?

I'm on UHF ham freq repeaters. In the page to enter freq's, PL's etc, I enabled the "talk around" function. I'd also like to enable nuisance delete for the scan mode, like my Jedi radios. GARY N4KVE

Remember in the TA mode, the MCS will mostly likely transmit using the RX PL code. IF it is CSQ, and your monitoring radio is PL protected....
Try programming a simplex only channel with the same frequencies as the output of the repeater pair. Make sure the radio is actually working on that frequency. When we humans get old and creaky, some things don't work right. Radios are the same....

The problem is not with the radio, it's with me. When I push the button for direct/repeater, & that is displayed, what am I supposed to push next? That's my problem, I don't know what button to push to choose between direct/repeater, as the radio politely waits for me to make my choice. I can't make the simplex arrow doesn't come on like on some simplex freq's which are in the radio. So my question isn't what's wrong with the radio, but how do I choose between direct/repeater while this is displayed? Thanks. GARY N4KVE

Gary,
1. Go to "radio wide" and under the advanced tab set the "direct mode" to "operator selectable".
2. In the conventional personality under the "Direct/Talkaround" tab make sure that "Direct Talkaround" is checked in the check box.
3. Program one of the unused buttons on the control head for "Dir". This is a toggle function so it will turn on & off direct mode.
After that you should be good to go.

Finally success! A few PM's with Fineshot & we figured it out. I couldn't program dir to an unused button because it was in the menu list. The minute I removed "dir" from the menu list, I was able to program "dir" to a button. When I previously pushed a button & direct/repeater appeared, I was actually pressing a "menu" button, although I don't understand why I couldn't choose direct in the menu, but it now works, & it doesn't matter why. Great board where people can knock heads together & figure things out. Thanks to all who helped. GARY N4KVE
