Looking to buy a 900 portable, I have a choice between the MotoTrbo and the MTX9250.

Anyone had any luck with the Trbo yet?

The 9250 does Privacy Plus and FM, I believe. The TRBO does DMR and FM. 9250s are cheaper than TRBO portables. Some of us have been using TRBO, including a worldwide DMR IP net, for several years. There are amateur DMR repeaters scattered throughout the USA at this time. Look at this site for more information: http://dmr-marc.net/

Um, at 900, I can get a Trbo for $299 and a new MTX9250 for $199, so not much difference.

Here in Nevada, no one has anything except analog 900, are there any 900 repeaters using Trbo within 6 hours drive from where I am? Probably not.

I am interested in the actual, physical dealings from anyone who has done either mod, and what they think of it. The radio would be used strictly for ham, since the commercial 900 systems around here are all either EDACS or LTR. Public safety is primarily VHF or statewide is 800 EDACS.

This would end up being strictly a ham radio, with hardly any use. The only advantage of the Trbo would be possible use later in the commercial band with encryption.

It has been done. And if you are within 6 hours of Vegas then you are within range of a 900 repeater. But it's analog. I don't think anyone has gotten the repeater out of band. The OOB mod that's floating around is geared at analog. Also if your radio has the trunking flash then you won't be able to go OOB. The radio will take the frequencies but she no worky
