XTL5000 DES-OFB encryption problem

Hi all,

I'm quite a novice at this, and have hit a brick wall. We operate several Astro Spectra XTL5000. They were ordered with an encryption package, but we never had them keyloaded. We now have a need for encryption, and when attempting to load them now, the keyloader isn't recognizing the radio. When I enter maintenance mode, I am shown "DES-OFB" and "DES XL".

Can anyone help narrow our problem down? Are we dealing with a firmware issue, or hardware? If it is showing "DES-OFB" in the maintenance mode, does that mean it has the necessary hardware, or that it just have the potential for it?

In speaking with Motorola, they suspect we have a bad encryption board. If that's the case, we have 11 boards that are bad (ie 11 radios that will not program). Furthermore, Motorola said not to waste our time sending it into the factory for repairs, as they no longer support our version of radios. Barely 7 years old, and no support? Yikes.

If anyone can shed some light on this, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

What keyloader are you using?

I can't be 100% certain, as we borrowed it. I will double check with them, but I think it was the kvl 3000.

Also to add to this, we have two Spectra Plus radios that loaded just fine. The kvl owner said they've loaded thousands of similar radios and have never run into this issue.

Thanks for the help!

First off, which is it? An Astro Spectra OR an XTL5000?
Remote or dash mount?
What model control head?
High power or no?

I'm assuming you're using the KVL in "ASN" mode, and not "Astro 25" mode.

Look in the secure tab of the XTL5000 in the CPS...make sure "PID" is checked, and "CKR" isn't. You should then be able to load the DES key.
