Smartzone 7.x What to brush up on?

Hello,

My company will soon br migrating from a Smartzone 4.1 system, to the Smartzone 7.x system. I was wondering if anyone can give me a heads-up on any areas of study that would prepare me for migrating and maintaining the 7.x system. I am a twenty year radio man, but from what I understand, the 7.x system's "components" will be I.P. based. Logic tells me, that I should brush up on my networking skills. Also, I am sure that the new PC's connected to the system will be with an Windows 7 OS, so it seems that I should learn the ins and outs of the windows 7 OS. Does any of this sound correct?

Any info is appreicated!

Thank you,
Jerry

The best thing you could do is get your employer to send you back to Schaumburg for some training on the system.

These things are ungodly complex, and to try to explain what to "brush up" on in a forum such as this would be nearly impossible.

Knowledge of IP schemes, routing, subnets, etc is paramount in maintaining these systems. The scary thing about 7.x is there's more IP and computer components to it than there is RF.

Get yourself into the class in Schaumburg. It's invaluable.

d119,

Thank you for the reply. Hopefully, my employers will enty up the funding for some classes from motorola. I know what you mean about the system being too complex to "brush up" on it. In light of that, I actually hesitated in posting this thread at all. What I was/am looking for, is any tidbits of info here and there to send me in the right direction to learn. Your comment of understanding IP schemes, helped to reaffirm my feelings of needing to learn that area better.

Any other little tips or suggestions is what i'm looking for, and is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jerry

You should participate in the acquisition process for the new system in order to insure that adequate training is incorporated into the contract.

Your training will consist of three components: self study, computer based courses [on-line training] and instructor led. The instructor led components can be presented at your location or in Schaumburg.

If you look on MOL, you can find a training roadmap that will recommend specific courses for your objectives.

Some representative elements are:
Bridging the Knowledge Gap (ACT101-E)
Networking Essentials in Communication Equipment (NST762)
Advanced Networking in Motorola Communications Equipment (NWT003)
Understanding Frame Relay (ENG948)
Understanding TCP/IP (ENG945)
Trunking Concepts (TRK100-E)
Understanding the Principles of LAN’s and WAN’s (TEL1218-10)

Also, at MOL you can download the entire documentation set for the specific release you are getting. This will be comprised of over 100 documents and over 400 Megabytes so plan to spend some time on the download and a lot of time on self-study.

This 4.1 system wouldn't happen to be in South Dakota?

Actually, there are enough of these systems fielded that you should be able to contact someone close to you if you want to see one in action.

It is quite a culture shock for "twenty year" radio guys. Just look at the maintenance section of the GTR manual. It tells you when to clean the dust off the fans. That's it. Nothing to align.
