XTS5000 - can you use a real RIB?

Can you prog an XTS5000 using a real Moto RIB?

I've checked the archives and established that you CANNOT use a Jedi cable!!! I think you need to use a dedicated serial or USB Ribless cable...but I think these cables are relatively "simple" to build...and you can buy then cheap on Fleabay. So if its easy to build a Ribless programmer, is there no simple RIB to radio pin out mod??

I also downloaded an XTS5000 brochure and it listed a real RIB as an accessory???

I think the Ribless cable just uses a MAX232 and voltage regulator...so its basically doing the same thing as a real RIB?

You just answered your own question. No rib for a XTS5000. While there are Chinese made cables available on the auction site, I wouldn't chance an $800+ radio with a $20 cable. I just had a discussion with Erik, MTS2000DES on this very subject. While I don't mind using a MTS2000 that cost me $50 with a $20 ribless cable that's not OEM, I won't take a chance with my XTS5000. However, just last night I picked up a hardly used factory USB XTS5000 cable from a friend for $50, & it works perfectly. To me, & a lot of others here, it's not worth it to take a chance & end up with an expensive brick. GARY N4KVE

The XTS5000 radio uses a different protocol for programming. So the RIB would NOT be used. The cable is different too.

If an OEM serial XTS5K Ribless cable is just a MAX233 and voltage regulator, instead of building a homebrew lead is it OK to buy a cheap ready made one from Fleabay and then just dismantle it and check the wiring/soldering before using it??? I presume the MAX233 and voltage regular are "real" quality components rather than fakes?

Anybody want to sell me an OEM serial XTS5K lead for $30!!

On another matter, are the Far East XTS5K's fakes or real?

I briefly had a "fake" HT1550 which had a fake case, battery, charger, antenna and an OLD real but faulty and "knocked about" PCB!!!!...95% new HK rubbish!!! The PCB looked like it had been on a rubbish dump...lots of scratches on the screening cans and the whole PCB looked dirty..although you would expect even a really well used HT1550 to have a clean internal PCB!!! But to somebody who is not a Moto "enthusiast" and did not have a real HT1550 to compare both radios, they would probably never had known that the radio was a fake!!...although they might have wondered why the metal chassis back kept popping out of the case and why the antenna socket was misaligned causing the antenna to be way off from vertical!!!
