Has anyone been successful in creating a system key (software based) for radios. Our SAR team has multiple MCS2000 radios and Id like to use a system key to eliminate others changing stuff. Is this possible ? I read some stuff on another forum but never got a definate answer.

The only thing a software system key will do is allow you to create/edit trunking systems/personalities.
To enable read/write restrictions you will need an Advanced System Key (ASK) or an Advanced Conventional Key (ACK) which resides within a dongle which needs to be physically connected to the PC/Laptop while reading/writing/programming.
Typically the system administrator would purchase a single Master ASK/ACK from Motorola, then use this master key to create any number of Child Keys (which are purchased blank) with whichever privileges are to to be conferred on the field tech?

System Keys in many areas are considered intellectual property of the system owner and you should contact the system manager for getting a legit copy. Being many managers have moved to the ASK, don't be suprised if that is what you receive.

I don't think you folks are quite understanding what he's wanting to do. Hell, maybe I'm not understanding it.
I think he wants to lock the radios down such that nobody but him can read or write to them. Which in certain situations makes good sense.
I don't think it has anything to do with trunking.

D119 that is my understanding to. Just password protect the codeplug that is if MCS software allows that.

We attempted to utilize password protection on our MTS and MCS radios during rebanding but were unable to do so. The ASK was the only option that we were able to find.
Yes I mis-read the question as well.

Correct looking to lock the radios from read write. We have had too many get corrupted with members trying to change stuff themselves. I am very familiar with the ASK as I help maintain a few Astro systems so was looking to do something similar. I'll keep digging and see what I can find. We were able to do this with the CDM series radios and have had no issues but i dont find the ability in the MCS. Thanks again.

If you are not using trunking and want to lock the radios, you can request a conventional ASK from Motorola. Good luck finding someone who knows what a Conventional ASK is and how to order one.
They do exist and will do what you want on ASTRO25 and above radios, not sure if the older MCS/MT radios support Conventional ASK
