won't turn on as in display is dead and won't respond to any of the buttons? or is it locked? plug it in and see if you can read it

No power..Appears you might have taken the fuse out.
Time to dig out the Torx driver and remove the frame.
Look near the battery contacts, left side of these, tiny SMD fuse, 4 amps.

I am confused.. you say Fpa.. Front panel access. Were you trying to program this radio by the front keypad? If so that is FPP Front Panel Programming. If that is the case then the HT1250 does not support that. You probably have a HT1550 with the optional red battery that supports that option.

No, this is a ht1250 full keypad. Here is a post that explains the FPA http://batboard.batlabs.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=88113
Any other ideas on what could have caused this?

I've "played" with the test mode on my HT1250s before, but it always exited when I would power-off the radio. In your case, the radio powered off while in the test mode. You may have either blown a fuse by coincidence as Gary mentioned, or perhaps you threw your radio into boot mode for flashing by accident and can't exit. In order to troubleshoot further, I would need answers to the following questions: 1. What was on the display immediately before you lost power? 2. What were you trying to access at the time that you lost power? 3. Did you have the radio connected to your computer at the time? If so, did you also have a flash adapter connected? 4. When you power-on the radio does the led on top of the radio flash momentarily?

even if it got booted somehow as long as the upgrade tool had not started and erased the eprom it should still turn back on after cycling the power and battery. turn the radio on and all the way up and put your ear up to the speaker and listen for a hiss? I'd start looking at the fuse
