New XPR-6550 with old TRBO Messaging Gateway -

Good Morning all,
Was asked to look at an issue yesterday that I think I understand, but would like some feedback from the group on.
Customer has a pool of older XPR-6500s on the 1.6.n firmware. They also have the old Motorola Text Messaging Gateway (TMG).
Now they have received a replacement XPR-6500 with 1.9.n Firmware, but the new radio does not register, show up in the list of active radios after we "update" on the TMG, even after we "send" a message from the new portable, or try and force ARS traffic. Is there someplace where the radio must be loaded / configured manually in this TMG or is the new firmware just not compatible with this old (now withdrawn) package ?
Can I back load the old firmware in the new radio if that's the issue ? Or just sell them a new (preferably our) data gateway.
Happy New Year all,
Jeff.
