Well hello all, this is my first post on here as I just registered today. I was refured to this website by a good friend so I'm slowly looking my way around and learning things here. All of my life I've always had an interest in radios and wanted to know as much as I could about them, I've learned alot but still have alot of questions hoping you guys will be more then willing to answer them or to point me in the right direction. I'm aware that after you read my questions there will be many of you who will simply say "just use a scanner" and while I respect you're opinion I will only hope you'll respect me just wanting to have a radio instead. I don't choose to have one to "look cool" or because of "better reception" but because I want to know as much as I can, the inside and outs, it's functions, everything possible.

I recently purchased a Motorola XTS2500 (700/800) and had it programmed by a friend who had put what he could on it but later finding out he had set a password to it after having someone else trying to add what they could but couldnt because of the password. Keep in mind this radio can't transmit. My friend wasn't to fond of giving out the password so here I am at a road block. Any ideas to get around that ?

Can I (myself) purchase the cabel and software ? If so from where ?

Can the system I'm listening to see my radio even if it can't transmit ?

Did my friend have to come up with an ID to allow me to monitor the systems ?

Go back to your first friend, and have him put a password you can remember into your radio.

Yes, you can buy the programming software (RSS) and cable for your model. Discussions on purchasing the RSS - on this board, to prevent piracy - are limited to directing you towards a Motorola dealer in your area. Look them up in the yellow pages, or on line.

There's a good chance, since you selected a 700/800 model, that you are listening to a public agency trunked radio system. Those generally have auto-affiliation, and subscriber units (mobiles and portables) will attempt to register with the system. If your first friend programmed all channels (talk groups) as receive only, they probably can't try. However, I don't know how they would perform. ie; would they beep at you all day because they are unable to affiliate, and because of that would they track talkgroups correctly? Hard to say. Probably a question for your first friend.

As for whether your first friend had to come up with an ID, that's a good question. Did he have system keys that let him create a template for a new portable, or did he just modify an existing codeplug? I don't recall if the XTS will let you program a new unit without the keys or not. Maybe one of the MTUG guys can answer.

I've already tried to ask my first friend for the password but he feels very uncomfortable giving that out due to what he programmed in my radio and it possibly getting out which I understand, I'm sure he could lose his job. I'm trying to add more into the radio but I can't with this password (road block) I wish there was something I could do but in the mean time I will look into the software and cabel. Any idea what I would need ?
