Direct Frequency on XTS/XTL

On my XTS series radio i have a button programmed for Direct Mode. I also have the box checked in the channel assignment. But when i choose a frequency in my radio to put it in direct mode, every channel in the radio is in direct mode, not just that particular one. I have a separate button programmed to do this. On my HT1250, i had a separate button also but the only channel that went to direct mode is the one i choose it on, not every channel. Any Ideas or is this the way it is??

The DIRECT or Talkaround switch IS radio wide.

Yeah, my XPR does the same thing. Only the displayed freq goes to simplex. So of course, I just had to pull out my XTS, but instead of a simplex button, I access it in the menu. Same results. Will is correct. All freq's are simplex. I can see advantages to both methods. It would be nice if there was a way to choose which method in the CPS. GARY

Gary and Will,
Clear something up for me. When you check the talkaround box in the CPS does that mean that when you use the talkaround button on the radio that that particular channel will be included when you go to talkaround? In other words, what purpose is served by checking the talkaround box?
Regards,

You know Tom, I always check the talk around box, so I don't know. Actually, on a simplex only freq, I don't check the box, but I have always checked the box on a repeater freq. Hope you are well Tom. I just had my annual heart checkup last month, & I'm good to go. GARY

Checking the Talkaround box allows you to define a frequency and squelch mode for the talkaround function for that specific mode. It also makes talkaround available on the menu if so defined when that channel is selected.

I believe that if you don't check that box, you can't have the ability to encode a PL or DPL of your setting on that channel. It forces your TX to be carrier squelch.

I don't believe that to be the case. I think you can set a PL or DPL for transmit or receive on each channel regardless of whether Talkaround is enabled. However, if you do select talkaround it allows you to define a separate "talkaround" transmit frequency and PL/DPL code.

OK, here is the scoop. We just fired up an XTL with repeater channels in it. Back when I first programmed the radio, I didn't know about the check box for direct frequency. This radio would not open the squelch on a PL code 156.7 receiver on another radio when set to the direct mode at the control head.
Opened up the codeplug of the radio. Went to the CONVENTIONAL selection. Then went to the CONVENTIONAL selection again. On the GENERAL tab you will see a box for DIRECT FREQUENCY. Unless that box is checked, you will not be able to set or change the PL on any direct frequency if the radio has a repeater pair for that mode.
Going to the area under the zone channel information, you need to move the screen display way over to the right. Somewhere to the right is a place where you can set the type of TA tone squelch. If the box mentioned above is not checked, you can't get the radio out of the disabled selection. Once that check box mentioned above is checked, you can now set the talk around tone squelch to what ever you want.
I rest my case for the mentioned tone squelch issue on a talk around or direct frequency selection on the XTL.
