1225 RSS 4.0 No Com Port

Post by cms1126 »

Okay, i have searched high and low and tried every fix i can think of...but for the life of me i cant fix it! I'm trying to program a GR1225, using RSS 4.0,on a Dell D820, running XP Pro SP3. I've never had a problem till now. When i click read or write, i get the Check Com Port error but when i go to computer configuration, the only selection i get for the ports is "NONE" . I've re-installed the software, checked for conflicts in the device manager...but nothing!Any ideas from the peanut gallery would be greatly appreciated!

Make sure that nothing else is commandeering the Comm Port.

Restart the computer and go directly to the 1225 program.

When you say "I've never had a problem until now", do you mean you've programmed 1225 series radios with it before? Since Google tells me the D820 is a laptop with no serial port, I'm assuming you're using a USB-to-Serial adapter? The 1225 software only sees the first 4 com ports, so the adapter needs to be configured as one of those. By default they tend to assign themselves with a high com port number, sometimes in the 20's.

Once you get the software to see it as a com port, your mileage will still vary as to whether the adapter will work properly for programming.

I've checked the device manager for conflicts...but noting looks like its conflicting to me. The laptop does have a serial port on it...no usb adapter. I have programmed 1225's before with this laptop with no problems at all.

What radios do you own?: Mostly Motorola

Keep in mind too, with a lot of the usb to serial adapters out there, if you plug it into a different USB port than what you did last time, it will assign another com port number.

You should be able to go in to the properties of your com port adapter in the device manager and change the com port number in there. I have one I occasionally use on one of my laptops, and I just got in the habit of checking that com port number before I opened the software. I never seemed to know what it was going to be when I used it.

Whats between the computer and the repeater?

RIB? Cable?

I can say from experience that my home made cable and rib worked fine on 1225 mobiles. When I used the same set up on a gr1225, it did not work. I had to borrow an OEM Moto ribless cable and it worked to program the gr1225.

I went ahead and bought the Moto cable myself. Never had a problem since.

I took the advice of many of the senior members here and use OEM programming cables for all radios i do for friends.

Where are you located? PM me your location, I will loan my cable to you or I will ship mine to you.

So it's a real serial port, but the RSS doesn't see any COM ports and so won't let you select it. Very strange, for sure. The operating system is what reports the presence of the COM port to the software, so maybe the driver is corrupted? You can try uninstalling the serial port in device manager...then reboot & XP should prompt you that it found new hardware & it'll re-install the standard serial driver.

You can also try checking for proper serial port operation in Hyperterminal by shorting pins 2 & 3 together...you should see any characters you type 'echo' back after each keystroke.
