OT: EF Johnson 5100 Problems

I couldn't quite find a group/forum to place this in so I figured I'd give it a shot and reach out to the only group I trust!

I purchased an EF Johnson 5100 and cannot get it to receive. When I put it in "monitor" mode and switch channels it sounds as if the RX frequency changes (the static changes) - but I never hear what I program into it. It is on Version 4.4.5, and lived with the 3364th ENG Battalion before I purchased it.

Here is the original link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 1290362487

Does anyone know what this could be?

Thanks in advance.

Since this post I have found that this issue is intermittent; the radio works with some frequencies (transmits and receives on 444.200/449.200) and not on others (transmits on 460.625 but doesn't receive and receives on 396.875 but doesn't transmit).

Any ideas?

My guess is that it needs an alignment. Sounds like the VCO is not working over the entire range your asking it to cover.

Ah...no kidding. Would something like this have to go to EF Johnson or could I just bring it to my local shop?

EF Johnson doesn't work on older radios. You can try Paul's Two-Way Radio Repair.

I have purchased parts from him and he is working on a 5100 for one of my club members at the moment.

If you have the radio programming software, did you also get the tuner software to go with it? It is not that hard to run through the alignment on those radios.

No...I'm using the software bundle we received through Civil Air Patrol which only comes with the PCConfigure software, nothing more.

This stinks!

Thanks, Marshall! I will give him a call some time in the future to discuss it all.

Go back to the CAP and have them supply the tuning software.
