I have a Motorola XTL2500.
Model #M21KSM9PW1AN
The "W" in position 9 indicates that the Primary System Type is programable, and Tone signalling and Binary signalling is one of the options.
Does this mean that this radio is "ANALOG TONE REMOTE" capable?

The W means nothing, really. Every XTL has a W in that position.

That being said, you'll need a tone remote panel in order to wire the radio up. You can go through either the 26 pin connector on the rear or the DB25 on the front.

You will not be able to channel steer the unit, btw, just basic tx/rx functions. You'll need a consolette for that and IIRC only the XTL5000 was available as a consolette.

Okay, I have 3 XTL 5000's we cant use because they are "DIGITAL TONE REMOTE" not "ANALOG TONE REMOTE".
I need a VHF radio 130-180MHZ, that I can change channels on with Analog tone remote. I also need encryption.
What radio should I buy?

I will also need a dual-band, same range (conventional) on the bottom, 800MHZ trunked on the top.??

Will, maybe you can tell me the difference between a digital tone remote and an analog tone remote.

I have heard of the radio being used in the digital mode or the analog mode, but never knew there was some sort of equipment that was a digital tone remote.

Maybe someone can un-confuse me on this one.

Is this a case where a radio vendor has come in and dropped some magical words to sell new radios?

Unless something has changed, you can get both 700 and 800 MHz in the same radio. Yup they will do conventional and trunking in the same radio if those features are installed in the radio.

I was actually hoping someone else could explain Digital vs Analog tone to me.
I know there is a difference, because the Tone remote radios I have are sure not working in tone remote. Motorola stated the boards I have are digital tone, not analog tone capable.
So far, this has been not much more than frustrating and expensive.

I have to dig a bit but I believe in a nutshell that the digital tone remote is a function of using the consolette in a CEB that utilizes ACIM cards or a digital remote like a MC3000. Mine are hooked up with a BIM card for audio I/O to the console and the ACIM bus provides Emergency and Enhanced ID functionality as well as channel steering if programmed that way in the system (mine are T12/R12). Now, in the have to dig department.... this is what I BELIEVE happens, I don't think there is any analog tone remote stuff going on the audio bus like guard tone / function tone but I've never monitored that. You might be able to use one of the digital remotes or a MIP5000 console hooked to the consolette to do what you want but not a analog tone remote in the common sense. There is no digital audio in/out of the thing at all, just digital control. If you want a conventional tone remote, it would require a external adaptor on the consolette and a deskset. Single channel, non steerable. Encryption doesn't matter as the audio in/out of the box is analog, it's a function of the radio as long as it's configured right. Sounds like you want remote front panel functionality, do-able but $$$.
