I was thinking that it might be nice to find a Motorola APX7500 VHF/UHF Radio with the Front Panel Programmable Flash. Will these be next to impossible to find on the used market? If I could find one, would this likely be around $2,000?

Good luck. I suspect you'll either find ALT/DEV junk (there's one seller on fleabay in China that had some) or you'll find a legit one for well over $5K and most likely not with FPP. Why on Earth someone would want to sell one a legit/tagged one is beyond me....unless it's hot... but then that wouldn't make it "legit" now, would it?

Your price point is not reasonable, but yes they can be found, and no they are not all ALT or developmental radios. I'd say closer to 3 grand is a fairer price

Accelerated Lifecycle Testing. The radio has been beat to :o on shaker tables, in hot/cold temperature cycles, etc. for the purposes of testing durability... then scrapped.

Here's an example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorola-APX750 ... 19e6bfb93a

Notice how the fins are warped a bit, and they look really abraided/"old"? ALT radio.

Why and how do ALT radios end up in China?

How come China has so many APX, XTL and XTS radios for sale?

The smattering of XTLs I have handy all indicate they were manufactured in Malaysia. The 7500 I have handy says Mexico. Moto outsources testing, manufacturing, etc. to wherever is cheapest.

Not entirely true. Mother M has a "factory" in Reynosa, MX to supplement the factory in Penang. Seems the tsunami a few years ago opened their eyes to the possibility of life without their main factory. Best to have a back up "just in case"

Of course, the silliness of all this is the new factory code in the serials!! It's an I for India! Evidently whoever picked it forgot Motorola doesn't use I or O because they look like a 1 or 0... Oops!!
