Has anyone heard about this?

One of the towns near me is switching over to UHF LTR trunked system. Naturally, I asked what brand of radio they are changing over to. To my suprise, he told me Motorola, it will be a new version of a HT1250 and that they were going to be the first in the country to use them.

Is my leg being pulled?

Probably not. Motorola has been making radios that do LTR trunking for a while now. Many of the popular current-production radios are available in an 'LS' version, which is capable of the LTR format. The MaxTrac, MTX, HT1250 and 1550 and their CDM counterparts are just a few.

No leg pulling. We've set-up a couple of LTR format systems with Trident LTR controllers & either P1225-ls or HT1250-ls radios. So far so good, system set-up was fairly easy & seems to be running very reliably. With the MDC capability of the HT series, you can make the radios do almost everything you would expect from a Motorola SmartNet type system.

But the 1250's that are LTR enbabled come w/out MDC.

You have to have a HT1550XLS to get both.

Correct. Only 16 conventional channel capability, and no MDC on conventional.

Well then, I stand corrected.

Now this leaves one wondering - why on earth did they not expand MDC to conventional... It doesn't make sense... oh wait! It's motorola!

I wondered the same thing. I mean, if the system went down, it would be nice to still have PTT-ID, call alerts, radio monitor, etc in conventional mode. At least then the only thing you'd really miss would be repeater coverage. But then it occured to me, they obviously want you to purchase HT1550XLS units to accomplish that.

As of last week, the Mot. units CAN do MDC over LTR & conv. They will upgrade your old units for $50.00 to do the sme operation. This also includes Quick Call II over conventional in the CDM1550LS+. They are doing away with the plain CDM1550 and you will only get the LS+ model now in the upper tier mobiles.
