I allowed a friend to program this radio, who after many attempts in trying to get the radio to accept it's new programming, gave it back to me saying the radio needs a new board. An error code 0 81 shows on the display. I have asked others who do this as a hobby and they have said the same thing that the board needs replacing. Is there a way to correct this error code without changing the board? It's a Saber II, model

Did you friend use a Dos Window on a New PC? It needs to be programmed on a Slow (386) True Dos mode. I have the same UHF model. And it does not like a Pentinum...

A slow DOS only computer was used and the error code could not be fixed.

I have run into this problem quite a few times and the key thing seems to be a SLOOOOWWWW computer (486 or slower) and you have to be programming from pure DOS. Not from Windows. If you try the above I'm sure something will happen even if the error code changes. Be patient.

Hi:

If your radio worked OK piror to programming, chances are very high
you have corrupted the Pirmary Code
Plug. Once that happens, it generaly
requires Motorola or a Certified Tech
to resolve the problem.

I have restored Many Saber Code Plugs
damaged by improper programming platforms
and if you wish, I can give it a try.

If it does get restored, PLEASE be forwarned
to use a 386-486-25 for any futher programming. Doing so will save you alot of grief. ( and Monies )

If you are in a position to try the programming again, here are a couple of things that have saved me from myself. Depending on what got corrupted, they may or may not help you, but if you're already looking at a restore, I doubt you have much to lose.

1) You can at least narrow down whether the COPE or CORE data got corrupted by unplugging the flex from the controller board on the shield, and seeing if you can program the radio as a Saber I. If you can, and it works properly, the corruption is most likely in the COPE portion of the code plug.

2) After corrupting the COPE portion of the codeplug on one of my Saber IIs (dumb tuning procedure error on my part), I managed to revive it by creating a minimal Saber II personality, with only the zone and channel option enabled, and without programming any channels, other than the deault Z1 C1 values that were created with the file. After loading the file (using RPF tuning values), reading the file, and loading it again, the radio was behaving properly, and I was again able to load my standard codeplug without any problems.

If this works for you (and it may not depending on your problem), you will have to have the radio re-aligned, but a re-alignment will probably be cheaper than a corrupted codeplug restore and a re-alignment.
