Hi all. Never posted in this area before, but I am wondering something.


I have a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT 5-Speed. I am going to be installing a 6-strobe mini-edge (magnet mount only, I know I know it's bad, but I don't want holes in my roof) on the top of the cab, and I want to put probably a VHF Maxtrac and a siren/lightbar controller in there too. Also mounting a glass-mount VHF antenna for the radio.

Unfortunately, I have the stick shift right in the middle of the damn floor in front of the dash....what would be a reasonable setup? Maybe in the back of the extended cab where nobody will be in the center, with everything facing the front end?

Throw away the glass mount VHF! Get a magnet mount NMO mount and use a 1/4 wave.
Since this sounds like you are probably a fireman or other volunteer and this is your own vehicle, for the siren....SVP Model#SC550 Micro-Tone. It's a siren/light controller with ALL controls in the microphone handset unit. The main unit will go under the passenger seat, which contains the relay center and siren. For the radio, contact Quickmount and order the remote mount kit to reloate the main transmitter body under or behind the seat. The strobe supply can also go under the seat.
I wouldn't recommend the SVP unit in a professional type vehicle, but it's a great unit for the individual and I've even used them in unmarked cars with no problems.

I have been working on a couple of Rangers and I went to the dealer to check space on the current models. It looks like there is space ahead of the shift lever that would allow mounting of at least 1 Maxtrac. I have an 89 w/ 5spd and have 1 Maxtrac mounted to the passenger's side of the trans tunnel (facing the driver). I will also be mounting one ahead of the shifter. I plan to use an Able-2 mount this is almost vertical (just enough tilt to see the display).
