Hello All!

I have sort of a tech question? I have three Astro Spectras

I have them connected to an Astron 70 amp power supply.

The problem is they will power up and work great till I go to either read or program the radios. When the radios reset they go into Fail 01/90.

I can power off the power supply and wait a few minutes and power back up and the radios will work fine like before.

I don't seem to have this problem with other radios that I use on the power supply.

Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated

I'd start looking at leaky capacitors as a possibility.

Leaky capacitors in the radio do not cause the FAIL 01/90. That is a problem with the control head communicating with the radio.

Check for proper cabling and power connections.

Then check the control head, two capacitors on the left side looking at the back on the W4, 5, and 7.

What model number are the radios? One piece or remote head? What programming cable are you using?

I've seen a lot of Spectras with bad caps, don't recall ever seeing that cause an 01/90 but I suppose it's possible. One of the caps in the control head is for the display high voltage, it just makes the display dim when bad. The other is on the input to a 5V regulator... that might cause a control head communications problem, but I don't see why it would only happen when programming. Also it sounds like it's happening on all three radios, can't see them all failing exactly the same way from caps. I'd be more inclined to suspect the programming setup.

If it's a one piece radio ignition sense voltage would have to go through the programming cable. Since this voltage is what powers the control head, a bad connection or cable could cause low voltage to the head that might send the radio into failure.

The only other thing common to the three radios is the power supply, it might be putting out some noise or ripple that's screwing with the micros. If you've got another good supply around you could try one on that.
