Astro spectra W4 VHF display gone

Post by radiocat37 »

I have a W4 astro spectra T04KLF9PW4AN. Everything has been fine and now I have no display. The controls all work fine but nothing lights up. The RF is good but no visual display. I have tried two control heads and nothing.

If this is a capacitor issue where should I look (which board).

If this is possibly something else then any ideas???

Which of these work and which don't.... display, backlight, rx light, tx light, volume control, channel selector, programmable buttons.
Did you change anything just before it quit, such as programming?
Are the voltages on the red, green, and orange power wires good?
You tried pressing the DIM button, right? (sorry, have to ask :) )

I don't think any of the caps in the transceiver should cause no display, there is one in the control head that will though... since you say you tried two different heads either it's something else or you're unlucky enough to have two bad heads.

Nothing lights up.....nothing. But all the controls work. The radio was working great yesterday and definitely have two good heads. I am getting another spectra and cable today to try some more tests. I will get back to you. Yes tried the DIM button and voltages on red and green are good.

As far as I can tell from the schematics most of the things that control the display, such as the power and serial data, are also used for other things, so if the controls and buttons work those should be okay, but it appears that there are a couple of control lines that are just associated with the display so I would suspect you lost one of those somewhere, either in the cable or radio. You could try reseating the interface board connectors inside the radio.
