Change band coverage on XPR6550

I was talking to an associate of mine that stated that although he has purchased a XPR6550 with band coverage of 450-512MHz, he was able (I am assuming through CPS) to move the radio to 403-470MHz. Is that possible or was he just doing a lot of idle talking? And if one is able to do that, how reliable is it to make that sort of change since I would think that some of the RF component would not be happy...

People have been able to "hack" the CPS to allow a 450-512 radio to function well in the 440 ham band. While you can't get it to function down to 403, there is obviously some point where performance will start to suffer, & get worse the lower you go. But from the many 450-512 radios my friends have, they work just as well in the 440 ham band as true 403-470 radios. The small trade off is when you hack the CPS to allow a 450-512 radio to work below 450, you can never read the radio to make changes to it. You can only read the saved code plug. If you try to read the radio, you will lose all freq's below 450. Of course they can be restored by putting the saved code plug back in the radio. GARY
