HT1250 - CPS Audio Processing Filter setting?

In HT1250 CPS there is an option to enable the Audio Processing Filter (APF).
What does this actually do?
The Help Pages says the APF is activated when the RX audio exceeds a certain volume threshold...but I'm not sure what this means?
Does it stop you from having the volume too loud?
