MCS2000 - Using a Model 3 Control Head on a Model 2?

Post by DLAZ »

I am in the process of putting together a number of MCS2000 radios for mobile use with a 400 mhz repeater project.

I have the radio units which are M01SKM9PW6AN that had previously been used with remote head/cable setups. I don't have the original heads or cables and want to convert these to dash mount 1 piece radios. As the model code indicates that these were originally used with Model 2 rotary knob 1x14 digit display heads can someone inform me if the Model 3 2x14 digit display w/ DTMF keypad heads can be used on them? If so does that require a setting change in the CPS programming and or does it require a firmware change also? The 'new' Model 3 heads will be coming off of some used 800mhz 1 piece dash mount radios.

Are there any other things I will need (or need to be concerned about) in converting these former remote mount Model 2 radios to dash mount Model 3 control head / face radios?

Thank you.

I put a m3 head on an m2 radio for SnGiggles here and most of the functions worked as expected (data id mapping ??). It will work and it will display but there was iirc one or two functions that failed. Remember as well that there was a shroud to go between the head and the brick that will be needed. The remote plate matched the size of the brick but the head is infact bigger than the brick.

Thanks for the reply tsunami_australia!

- Once the M3 head was on the radio is there a way for CPS R02.02.00 to automatically recognize it's on there or to change / specify the new display to an M3 from the original M2 in the codeplug so it will function correctly/completely? I epecially want the DTMF function so I don't have to buy DTMF microphones to control some repeater functions.

I will have the adapter bezels / shrouds from the 800mhz M3 radios so that is covered.

Along the same lines...

- Would it be possible to mount a Model 1 control head on a Model 2 for some friends who don't need / care about the 2x14 digit display w/ DTMF keypad head functions on the Model 3 heads but would like the built in speaker?

Thanks again, and in advance for any additional assistance.

Just found this thread over at P25 Forums: "MCS2000 Control Head Type Change" ( http://communications.support/threads/2 ... ype-Change )...

It is starting to sound rather involved / complicated for a newb like me...

Maybe I should just consider going with Model 2 control heads and DTMF microphones...

If anyone has successfully done the M2 to M3 control head swap I'm still interested and also in the M2 to M1 swap.

Thanks.
