M9623 transistor needed

Post by WA2VNV »

Attempting to repair a VHF Motorola N1254A 60 Watt amplifier (remember the Convert-a-Com ?) now used in 2 meter repeater service and it looks like the M9623 driver has died. These are PNP RF transistors from Mocom 1970's era. This amplifier has been running nicely at the repeater since ~2005 and I'm not ready to give up on it yet.

If anyone has a old parts donor VHF radio from the late 70's era please take a look.
I could also use any of that series as spares, M9622, 23, 24 25. I will pay shipping, etc if you find anything I can use. Yes, I know RF Parts claims to have them - only $46 each - not worth it. NTE equal is $30.

Follow up..... I received the VHF Micor 110 Watt PA board today (Friday 11/18) and a big thank you to Joe K7JEM for sending it promptly. I installed the M9623 that I removed from the Micor PA board and still no output despite a meter reading on the test set pin 2, the input to the M9623. Murphy doing me in. To make a long story short, It turned out the bad transistor was the controlled stage, the M9622 that drives the pre-driver M9623. Even though I was getting a pin 2 reading showing some power from the 9622, enough to confuse me, it was not enough to turn on the 9623. Good thing Joe sent me the whole board and not just the 9623 that I thought was bad. So after I swapped out the 9622 from the Micor PA board and installed it, now making normal full power at 60 Watts. I cut back power to a nice 40 Watt output because of being in repeater use even with a small 12 Volt fan on the heat sink that's keyed on with transmit.
A happy ending. 73's George
